Millennium Development Goals
Following a decade of summits and conferences, in September 2000, 189 nations adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration at the Millennium Summit. The Declaration committed the nations to a new global partnership to meet the world's development needs and set out eight time bound and quantifiable targets, known as the Millennium Development Goals.
With a target date of 2015, the Millennium Development Goals range from addressing income poverty and hunger to environmental sustainability and gender equality. They have become the common focus of the development community and provide a comprehensive framework for understanding both the local and global development challenges we face.
