Will I get any training?
So you've signed up for your expedition. What next? All our volunteer managers get full training in the UK and once in the country. This training is designed to compliment your own knowledge and experience. Check individual roles for specific training.
Development weekend
We run a compulsory development weekend for all volunteer managers based in the UK, about two months before your expedition. This is an opportunity to meet other volunteer managers and the country director, learn about planned projects, medical and kit advice. You'll also receive training for group work and development with young people in challenging environments and cross-cultural management techniques. Click here for a list of dates. If you not based in the UK we will make other arrangements to ensure that you have all the necessary information and are prepared thoroughly for expedition.
In-country training
Volunteer managers arrive in the host country about two weeks before the venturers for orientation and training. Some roles require this to be three weeks. Please check individual roles for more information. All volunteer managers will get supporting material for their role as well as soft and hard skills training, including interpersonal and conflict resolution, leadership and organisational skills, first aid, risk assessment, camp craft and long-wave radio usage.
Support
Getting involved
You'll receive a welcome park including a photographic ID card, paying-in book for fundraising activities, Raleigh t-shirt and welcome CD. The welcome CD has information on fundraising, general health, vaccinations and kit list for your chosen country and details about our travel and medical insurance.
Getting to know other volunteers
It's a good idea to get to know the other volunteer managers coming on your expeditions and those who have been before. You can do this by joining our support groups and societies, formed by returned volunteers around the world keen to share their knowledge and Raleigh experiences.
