The 4th challenge

PrintE-mail

Whilst on expedition you probably worked with people you never thought you'd meet, in places you never thought you'd see, making a difference to communities you never thought you could. So why not get involved now you are back at home?

You may know that Raleigh was founded on four challenges:

1. To be selected (today people select us too)
2. To raise the funds
3. To go on expedition
4. To make a difference on your return

Our fourth challenge is about providing support and opportunities for alumni after expedition, to continue making a positive impact on the lives of others. You can get involved in a number of opportunities to suit your interests and availability.

We are here to support you, so if you have an idea of your own get in touch.

Take a look at the various opportunities available.

Inspire change

Global Ambassadors

Having challenged yourself to an expedition; are you ready to challenge global inequality and injustice? Daunting it might sound, but sign up to become a Raleigh Global Ambassador and you'll quickly find that there are heaps of simple and engaging ways to increase awareness about international development issues and be a catalyst for positive change.

Our Ambassador programme will support you to share your Raleigh experience and take action on the issues that matter to you. We'll do this through running residential training weekends that are open to all alumni. To find out more, read our Ambassador FAQs or visit our dedicated Global Ambassador web pages.

So, what's stopping you? Sign up now to get out there and inspire change. Contact Shady Bajelvand, our Global Youth Coordinator on 020 7183 1269 or email ambassadors@raleigh.org.uk

Leaders of the future

Youth Forum

Our venturers often tell us they had the best time of their lives on expedition and we want to keep it that way. The Youth Forum exists to support the way Raleigh works with young people. Our members offer us invaluable advice, practical ideas and suggestions from a youth perspective.

We are in the process of developing the current forum and are recruiting new members to work with the existing members on an exciting new project which will change the way Raleigh works with young people before and after expedition.

As a member of the Youth Forum you will take ownership of your projects, work as a team to achieve results and make a valid contribution to our work. You will work with Raleigh staff, including the chief executive and gain valuable skills for your CV and work place experience. Your work will positively impact on the young people and host communities for which Raleigh exists.

To get involved email youthforum@raleigh.org.uk

At home and abroad

Raleigh societies

Whether you've just signed up for an expedition or have now returned there's a vibrant community of Raleigh alumni all around the world where you can share your Raleigh experiences.

Our international societies play a vital role in recruiting volunteers to join our expeditions, supporting them before and after expedition. They also organise a number of exciting challenge events, mini-expeditions and fourth challenge opportunities.

In the UK there are several groups dedicated to keeping the spirit of Raleigh alive through supporting new and returning volunteers and undertaking community and environmental projects in the UK. We are here to support our UK groups to reach society level by helping them to organise the kinds of activities which our international societies undertake.

Get out there

Spread the word

Many of our volunteers have been recommended us by friends or family members, in fact around 60% of those who join Raleigh have heard about us through a past volunteer. It's so important to the future of Raleigh that we make as many people as possible aware of the life changing experiences and opportunities which we offer. There's nothing quite as inspiring as hearing someone's personal story, so please give up a couple of hours to share your experience with others.

You can join a member of the head office team or get out there in your own networks. We're always looking for alumni to spread the word for a few hours at:

Open Events - for anyone wanting to find out more about Raleigh

Recruitment fairs and national shows -with topics ranging from planning a gap year to working in international development

School, university and workplace presentations - take your pick!

To discuss the opportunities and get involved call 020 7183 1270 or email info@raleigh.org.uk and a member of the team will get back to you.

PR please!

Building awareness online

Each and everyone us who have been on Raleigh have a story to tell, and we know that they are special and powerful. With so many of us using the internet and with social media being here to stay, why not promote Raleigh while you're already online?

There are many ways you can help people to find out about Raleigh or understand who we are and the work that we do:

Blogs Blog about your time on expedition, the international development issues you encountered and the changes you have been inspired to make back home.
Facebook Upload your photos, keep in touch with your expedition friends, join our fan page, organise events, link to your blogs or your Justgiving widget, use your status profile to talk about Raleigh. Be as creative as you like. It's easy; we know you're on Facebook all the time anyway!
Foursquare Hook up with Raleigh friends in your area and spread the word while you're exploring your city e.g. ‘Just had a curry in Brick Lane, but it was nowhere near as good as the food I ate in India whilst on expedition with Raleigh'.
Google Earth See your project on Google Earth and share your achievements with the world.
Photo stories Share your message in pictures. Submit a photo with a caption which sums up your time on expedition and the international development issues you faced. We will upload it to our ambassadors page.
Twitter Keep others informed about why Raleigh's important to you, what you've learnt from expedition and the actions you're now taking to make a difference back home.

For more information or to discuss any of your own ideas please contact Shady Bajelvand on shady.bajelvand@raleigh.org.uk

Get the gang together

Be an expedition co-ordinator

Perhaps it's been a while since the last reunion or maybe you haven't been in contact with your expedition group for many years; here's your chance to get everyone involved again.

The expedition co-ordinator is the official link between Head Office and your expedition group. You can help us ensure that exciting news and updates from Raleigh are passed to our alumni and vice versa.

We are looking to recruit someone from each Raleigh expedition, so if you were a venturer or part of the volunteer staff on any of the Raleigh expeditions over the years and you want to keep your expedition friends together, now is your chance.

Interested? Or want to find out who is your expedition co-ordinator? Email alumni@raleigh.org.uk  with your details or nominate a friend.
