Sorry this isn’t true, for 2.5 billion of you… We have been scattering our toilet posters up and down the country to raise awareness of the fact that if you get to go to the toilet in a safe, clean and private space, you are indeed one of the lucky ones. You are at significantly less risk of sanitation related diseases.

The Creative Collisions 2014 conference, held at London’s Olympic Park yesterday, brought together over 750 young people and youth sector leaders to discuss the key issues facing young people and youth services. Raleigh International alumnus Keyon Davis was on hand to deliver a speech to a room full of delegates on the importance of being a social citizen.

Global Handwashing Day is an opportunity for people around the world to raise awareness about the importance of the simple practice, which prevents deadly illnesses such as diarrhoea from spreading. Diarrhoea is still one of the biggest killers in the developing world.

Wednesday 9th July was an exciting day in Tanzania. British High Commissioner, Dianna Melrose together with Sihaba Nkinga, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, hosted an event in Dar Es Salaam to raise awareness of the importance of empowering young people in the country. This was illustrated through inspiring talks from some of our volunteers.

Raleigh International and community organisation People’s World Carnival Band joined other special guests including representatives of the Department of Work and Pensions, Haringey council and charity Business in the community (BITC) to celebrate a partnership aimed at supporting young people from Tottenham to participate in volunteer projects overseas, where they will be able to work together with rural communities to impact sustainable development whilst also going on their own personal development journeys.

We are excited to announce the pilot of Raleigh ICS Entrepreneur. An extension of International Citizen Service (ICS), ICS Entrepreneur aims to tackle poverty in some of the world’s poorest communities by supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses in developing countries.

This year Raleigh International is taking part in Live Below the Line, an awareness and fundraising campaign which challenges individuals and communities to eat and drink on £1 a day for 5 days. The campaign gives participants and their support the chance to gain a small insight into the lives of the 1.2 billion people who live below the poverty line.

In our first year working in Tanzania, we have welcomed 431 volunteers from 23 different countries. Tanzania is a land of contradictions, it’s one of the world’s poorest countries whilst at the same time it has vast natural resources, enormous cultural diversity and is politically stable.
