Expedition Manager (Costa Rica)

Role: Expedition Manager (Costa Rica)
Location: Field Base CATIE, Turrialba, Costa Rica
Salary: $2,000 per month
Contract: 12 months, with the possibility to extend for an additional 6 months

About the role

We’re looking for an exceptional Expedition Manager to oversee our Raleigh International program in Costa Rica. Your primary role will involve working collaboratively with the Expedition Operations Team to ensure the successful execution of each Raleigh Expedition. Your responsibilities will extend to managing a diverse team of international and intercultural staff to oversee project operations, leading on implementing all health and safety protocols, creating and maintaining Expedition budget, and collaborating with senior management to drive long term objectives of the business. You will also be key in leading programme design, collaborating with the team to conduct field visits, negotiate partnerships and coordinating project implementation.

About you

We are looking for someone who is a passionate, a self-starter, keen to lead and develop a team through a period of change and innovation. You should be keen hit the ground running, throwing yourself into the role and Costa Rican culture from day one. You need to be able to work collaboratively with the senior management team (Front Office based in the UK) as well as take the lead and work autonomously with your immediate team to drive forward project projects and change.

You should have experience in operational delivery within Raleigh or another similar organisation and be willing to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the operational delivery. You should be able to approach tasks considering multiple perspectives (e.g. both operational and business needs), whilst also on a personal level being passionate about the outdoors, creating impact and supporting young people.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Expedition Delivery

  • Create, implement and execute the operational plan for each Expedition cycle and long term yearly plans efficiently
  • Supervise the correct use of the resources and funds of the Expedition while foreseeing the upcoming needs for appropriate delivery.
  • Contribute to the creation of the Expedition budget in collaboration with the finance team, and Raleigh front office management team and manage the execution of the Expedition budget.
  • Participate in the strategic planning process and monitoring of indicators.
  • Support the ITG and Raleigh Management Team in the decision-making process of complex situations eg crisis management, investment plans, and growth management.

Programme Design: 

  • Lead Operations Coordinators to design, monitor and evaluate Expedition projects based on an impact framework and international best practices.
  • Develop results reports for internal use, donors or other stakeholders.
  • Ensure that projects align with organizational policies, development plans and sustainability standards.

Health and Safety

  • Lead on health and safety standards of the Expedition and staff.
  • Ensure that all staff, venturers, and others involved in the Expedition operation are aware of and appropriately trained in health & safety processes in line with ITG standards.
  • Ensure high standards in the management of crises and promote a positive safeguarding environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the Raleigh International Incident Team to manage any crisis or incidents in the appropriate manner.
  • Ensure that systems and processes align with ITG standards of health and safety.
  • Create, update, and improve the policy framework for health and safety, and risk management on a regular basis in line with ITG standards.
  • Act as “Duty Manager” on a rotating basis.

People Management

  •  Manage the Expedition Operations Staff Team, venturer managers and others who contribute directly to the implementation of the Expedition.
  •  Performance management of Expedition staff.

Person Specification

Required Experience

  • Previous experience in operational delivery with international projects with Raleigh or another organisation.
  • Experience in handling the logistics of events of up to 200 people with attention to delivering a transformational and memorable experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: Social development, rural development, sustainable development, social sciences, environmental engineering, ecology, biodiversity conservation, geography, project management, administration (logistics ideally) or other related that match with the Job description.
  • In-depth knowledge of international health & safety protocol and volunteer support
  • Experience in line management of staff and volunteers in an intercultural setting.
  • Experience in social and environmental project management.
  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously and with a wide variety of tasks from the simple to complex.
  • Experience creating and managing a budget, as well as accounting documentation where required.
  • Ability to eloquently address large groups, inspire to engage in the Expedition’s tasks and motivate collectively and individually to create a safe environment for all.
  • Fluent in English and proficient in communicating assertively with consideration of multiple parties involved.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, emotional intelligence stress management and heavy workload on a seasonal basis.
  • Strong management of IT tools, project management tools and CRM
  • Willingness to learn Spanish

Desired

  • Previous work with Raleigh International (Volunteer / leader / employee)
  • High level of Spanish
  • Experience of Expedition projects, as a volunteer or project leader with interest in creating direct and measurable impact to all stakeholders.
