A Day On A Natural Resource Management Project in Matambu, Costa Rica/ Un Día en un Proyecto de Manejo de Recursos Naturales en Matambu, Costa Rica
As a team, we have spent the last two weeks working on the construction of a cabin, which required us to dig 56 holes on newly cleared and flattened ground. Alongside this we have been widening the small, pre-existing trail and cutting in steps to make it safer and more accessible in the hope of encouraging eco-tourism to the village of Matambú.
Como un equipo hemos pasado las dos semanas pasadas trabajando en la construcción de una cabina, la cual requería excavar cincuenta y seis huecos nuevamente limpiar y aplanar la tierra. Al lado de este hemos estado ampliando el pequeño y pre-existente sendero y cortando las escaleras para hacerlo más seguro y más accesible con la esperanza de fomentar el eco-tourismo en la aldea de Matambú.
On this particular day we were cutting up a fallen tree that was lying across a path. We used this wood to construct a bridge over a stream that flowed over the track. It was tricky work and required a lot of communication and coordination as a team (as well as physical strength). Thankfully our efforts were rewarded with a refreshing drink of Mozonte made from the Mozonte tree by Don Ezequiel and his wife Gladys.
En este día particular teníamos que trabajar cortando un árbol que estaba caído en el camino. Usamos esta madera para construir un puente sobre un arroyo que fluyó sobre el camino. Era un trabajo difícil y requirió mucha comunicación y coordinación como un equipo (además la fuerza física). Afortunadamente nuestros esfuerzos fueron recompensados con una bebida refrescante de Mozonte, hecho del árbol de Mozonte por Don Ezequiel y su esposa, Gladys.
By that point it felt like an age since breakfast and we all appreciated our tuna and crackers for lunch. This was followed up with oranges from the tree that grows next to our table and a rush for the two showers to cool down in the cold water.
Por ese punto se sentía como un año desde el desayuno y realmente todos apreciamos nuestro atún y galletas para el almuerzo. Esto fue seguido con naranjas del árbol que crece al lado de nuestra mesa y una rápida ducha por los dos baños para refrescarse en el agua fría.
The afternoon brought with it a new set of challenges; we had arranged to make a visit to the local primary school, run by Vivian, one of Don Ezequiel’s ten siblings. Splitting into three groups we held sessions in three different classes with children ageing from 9-12. For the younger years our lesson focused on the importance of recycling and the development goals due to the fact that we had seen rubbish lying around and no proper recycling system during our time in Matambu.
La tarde trajo un nuevo reto; habíamos organizado hacer una visita a la escuela primaria local, dirigido por Vivian, uno de los diez hermanos de Don Ezequiel. Nos dividimos en tres grupos y tuvimos sesiones en tres clases diferentes con los niños con las edades entre nueve y doce. Para los años menores nuestra clase fue enfocada en la importancia del reciclaje y las metas de desarrollo debido al hecho que habíamos visto la basura alrededor de la aldea y sin un sistema adecuada de reciclaje durante nuestro tiempo en Matambú.
For the 6th grade, our aim was to improve their self-esteem and encourage them to take pride in their community. This was because Vivian was concerned by the numerous reports of children being bullied once they go to high school, in Nicoya, due to their indigenous roots.
This visit allowed us to improve our relationship with the local community. This is something we feel is particularly important as we are the first Raleigh group to come to Matambu and they have been incredibly welcoming and generous towards us. It also gave us an opportunity to practice our Spanish, which has been quickly improving with the help of our Costa Rican and Nicaraguan team members.
Por el sexto grado nuestro objetivo fue mejorar su auto estima y fomentarles a tomar orgullo en su comunidad. Esto fue porque Vivian, la directora de la escuela, estaba preocupada por los numerosos reportes de los niños que son intimidado cuando van al colegio en Nicoya debido a las raíces indígenas.
Esta visita nos permitió mejorar nuestras relaciones con la comunidad local. Esto es algo que sentimos es muy importante porque somos el primer grupo de Raleigh que viene a Matambú y han sido increíblemente bienvenidos y generosos hacia nosotros. También nos da una oportunidad para practicar nuestro español, cual ha ido mejorando rápidamente con la ayuda de nuestros miembros del grupo Costarricense y Nicaragüense.
All in all it proved to be a long (but rewarding) day and by sundown, we were all looking forward to our large portions of mac ‘n’ cheese and a chance to wind down playing card games and werewolf – a game our group takes very seriously!
En general, resultó ser un día largo (pero gratificante) y al atardecer, todos esperábamos con ansia nuestras grandes porciones de queso y una oportunidad de acabar con los juegos de naipes y el hombre lobo – un juego que nuestro grupo lleva a cabo ¡muy serio!
