Last Autumn Tom Boon headed on expedition to Borneo as a venturer on Expedition 12K. Having developed a taste for adventure, this October he will be tackling the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Raleigh Borneo
Towering over East Africa at 19,341 feet above sea level, ‘Kili’ is not only the tallest mountain on the African continent, but also the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
What were your reasons for going on expedition? How was it?
Having left school I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do next. I felt I needed to gain some life experience and learn new skills; Raleigh was the perfect opportunity for me to do so.
The expedition was a life changing experience for me. In such a short space of time I learnt so much about myself and other cultures, in addition to making what will be lifelong friendships along the way.
Why did you want to stay involved with Raleigh and why would you encourage your fellow alumni to do so?
Having witnessed firsthand the positive impact Raleigh have in the communities they work in was a huge source of motivation to me to continue to support the charity. I want people to be aware of Raleigh so they can have the same opportunities I had – it has changed my life and I feel it is important for more people to have those fantastic experiences
Just because you’re not an expedition, that doesn’t mean you cannot stay involved with the work Raleigh do. There’s so many ways, especially through volunteering at the Pre-Expedition Training Events or residential weekends such as the ROARs and VM selection.
What training have you been doing to prepare you for Kilimanjaro?
I’m currently doing cardiovascular training at least 2-3 times a week to prepare myself physically. I mainly walk on the treadmill in the gym on the highest incline, but I like to vary things with running and swimming too. I’m going to climb Snowdon a few weeks before my trip to Tanzania which hopefully will get me in the right frame of mind!
