Put together 10 enthusiastic volunteers with a similar number of villagers and a shared goal and soon the magic starts to happen. In our short time in Kot Gaun and Chap Gaun we have managed to dig 700 Metres of trench to accommodate a new delivery pipeline which should improve the struggling and inefficient water supply in this remote community.
We are here to promote Raleigh’s WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) campaign. We introduced ourselves to the majority of the community by meeting the Water Users Group and Women’s Group. They carefully explained their need for an improved water supply – the village currently only has water between 6am and 10am, so the people of Kot Gaun spend hours queueing for water. We are charged to deliver tap stands to provide access to safe water in our 9 week, multiphase programme.
Our first couple of weeks have been spent digging the trench that will carry a new pipeline to the village. Following that we will excavate toilet pits and build tap stands to complement their newly built properties following the 2015 Earthquake.
Going hand in hand with this project is an awareness raising campaign to inform the members of the community about the importance of hand washing, good hygiene practices and menstrual health. We have built links with the local school and the pupils are excited to help us create a mural depicting the seven stages of hand washing. We have enhanced their education by linking these seven stages to the top seven highest peaks in Nepal.
Our project partners Goreto Gorkha have been able to provide us with the material necessary for this project and it is hoped we will complete it with the help of all the school pupils. If our enthusiastic volunteers continue to excavate the pipeline trench at the same rate as at the start, we will soon achieve our goal and will be able to lay the pipe and fill the trench. Following this the village plumbers and craftsmen will connect the pipe to the storage reservoir and distribution tanks.
During the last phase of the project it is hoped to improve the distribution of water to the villages by the construction of a reservoir/ break pressure tank. This is a circular structure made by covering as metal frame with cement. This facility should improve the amount of water stored and ensure that the pressure from the top header tank does not become too great, risking the damage to the newly installed pipeline.
