Talking Travelling, Trek and Teamwork with Volunteer Rosanna: 'I Think the Most Effective Teams are the Most Diverse’/Hablando de Viajar, Caminar y Trabajar en Equipo con la Voluntaria Rosanna: 'Creo que los Equipos más Efectivos son los más Diversos'

Rosanna decided to volunteer with Raleigh as she wanted to push herself out of her comfort zone and do something completely unique on her gap year.

‘I chose to volunteer with Raleigh because I really wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something that would enable me to help people.

It seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to put myself out of my comfort zone. Going travelling is a lot easier because you can book your own accommodation, you can make sure everything is to your preference. Whereas here, you can’t. I wanted to do something I’d never done before, to see what I’m capable of. When I read the Raleigh website that was exactly what it was showcasing’.

Over the past seven weeks, Rosanna has volunteered on two projects – WASH and trek. Her first project, WASH, was based in the community of Valle de Casas in the Matagalpa region of Northern Nicaragua where she was working alongside other volunteers and community members to provide an increased access to reliable, clean and safe water.

In Nicaragua, only 63% of the rural population have access to clean drinking water and only 34% have access to improved sanitation. Raleigh’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects work towards improving access to safe and hygienic water facilities in rural communities. As well as, raising awareness amongst young people within the communities on basic hygiene practices such as, handwashing.

Raleigh works alongside communities and Project Partners to encourage communities to manage their own water facilities with the hope that the work volunteers do will be sustained and passed on to family members and the next generations when they leave.

‘The purpose of us being in Valle de Casas was to improve their water access. They already had a tap in each house, but these were sometimes faulty, and the water wasn’t always clean. So, we were there to help them improve their water source by building dams and clearing out their water system from the source (1 hours walk from the community).

There was also the educational, theoretical side to the project where we taught the community members about the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene and the conservation of water through building tippy taps and action days’.

Navigating on trek.

Rosanna’s second project was Youth Leadership (trek), which aims to challenge and empower young volunteers to develop personally. Over 20 days, Rosanna trekked the Miratombo Trail in Nicaragua, covering approximately 260km of diverse scenery whilst carrying all of her kit.

‘Our trek started in El Cebollal and has ended here in Laguna Asososca. On trek, I have developed my youth leadership skills, challenged myself and learnt how to deal with difficult situations.

As well as the skills I’ve learnt, trek was also a great opportunity to explore Nicaragua and experience the country first hand. My favourite part of the experience has been walking through lots of different communities. I loved meeting the people there and seeing how welcoming and willing they were to give us things such as, water’.

Trek encourages young volunteers to apply and improve their team work, leadership and orientation skills, which they can then cultivate and apply to the rest of their lives.

‘For me, I knew mentally I’d be able to do it as I’m quite relaxed. However, physically I’ve achieved a lot. I’m not naturally fit and I’m not naturally sporty but I’ve managed to keep up with everyone. I’ve developed my fitness and have also become a better leader’.

Sin embargo, físicamente he logrado mucho.

Raleigh brings together young volunteers from around the world to compliment one another’s strengths in order to make an impact in our communities. From Rosanna’s time on project, she’s learnt how effective working in a team with young people from different backgrounds can be.

‘I’ve learnt a lot about other people. I’ve learnt that so many different people can be from different backgrounds in a group but, we’re all fundamentally very similar. Anyone can make friends with anyone – it’s just important to reach out your arms and not stay in your own circle because there’s people out there that you can learn a lot from.

I’ve also found working with people from different countries and cultures very effective. Everyone has their own techniques and merging those together makes a team so much stronger. I think the most effective teams are the most diverse’.

‘He aprendido mucho sobre otras personas.

On asking Rosanna how she would describe her experience with Raleigh, she said:

‘Raleigh has been a once in a lifetime opportunity. It has obviously had its difficulties, but it has been insane. The opportunities Raleigh offer and the people you meet make it 100% worth doing even if it’s only for a short amount of time’.
