The Communications Team (Communications Officer – Lydia, Photographer – Petra and Videographer – Victoria) have just returned from joining the Nicaraguan trek group for their final five days of trekking the Miratombo trail.

For the past 21 days, the group of twelve volunteers and two Project Managers have been orienteering themselves through 260km of tough terrain, defeating volcanoes, battling blisters and building their leadership skills as a team.

As they reveled in the achievement of walking such a long distance, we asked them one question at their end-point – Laguna de Asososca  – how has trek made you a better leader? Here’s what they had to say…

‘I learnt the importance of listening to your group – be a democracy not a dictatorship. Whenever a decision needed to be made, I’d always ask the group and the majority would rule. Trek has made me put my leadership skills into practice and develop and improve them’ – Elspeth Fuller, volunteer from U.K.

‘I think trek has been a great opportunity to experience leadership in a way that enables the volunteers to lead and encourage themselves – it’s been really nice to watch their development’ – Jenni Tivey, Project Manager and Medic from U.K.

‘Trek has taught me how essential it is to find roles to fit specific people and skills and how to delegate according to what will be most effective to get the group to the end point’ – Rosanna Preston, volunteer from U.K.

‘Trek puts you in a position where people are relying on you – it taught me that even if you are struggling you must put on a positive front for the rest of the group to help get everybody through’ – Saskia Doherty, volunteer from Belgium

‘I have learnt the importance of knowing when to step back as a leader to let other team members do the work. This is most effectively achieved by delegating, delegating and delegating a bit more’ – Oli Jones, volunteer from U.K.

‘I’ve learnt that when you’re a leader on trek you have to go with what you’re thinking. It forces you to trust your own judgement and decisions – you take on everyone in the group’s opinions but in the end it’s up to you to make the final choice’ – Sophie, volunteer from U.K.

Project Manager, Stuart.

‘Having to steer 12 young adults towards completing our Nicaraguan trek has been an eye-opening experience. As a leader, the challenge has been empowering and facilitating the volunteers and the development of their own skills. We have encouraged them to take ownership and lead themselves and the rest of the team and it has helped me realise, at least, that leadership is in a large part about empowering others’ – Stuart Dawson, Project Manager from U.K.

‘I think leading a trek makes you more aware of others and their abilities – it teaches you to cater to a whole group and not just to yourself. When you’re a leader it’s not just about pushing on at the front, it’s also about dropping back and checking everyone else is okay’ – Grace Goodier, volunteer from U.K.

‘During trek I learnt the importance of getting a feel for the group and the people around you, especially when accessing authority as a leader’ – Theresa Wendeldtadt, volunteer from Germany

Trek encourages volunteers to challenge and develop themselves as a person whilst also getting the chance to witness an abundance of breathtaking scenery along the way. The groups, which have already completed the trek phase have returned a tight-knit team full of amazing stories, anecdotes and new skills, which can be nurtured and applied to the rest of their lives.
