Horizontes Experimental: An Eco-Tourist’s Dream Destination/Horizontes Experimental: El Destino Soñado de un Eco-Turista

Although Costa Rica only accounts for 0.03% of the Earth’s surface, it contains almost 6% of the world’s biodiversity. Consequently, 25.6% of Costa Rica’s land is protected through a country-wide system of national parks and private reserves, so to safeguard this biodiversity.

Aunque Costa Rica solo representa el 0.03% de la superficie de la Tierra, contiene casi el 6% de la biodiversidad mundial. En consecuencia, el 25.6% de la tierra de Costa Rica está protegida a través de un sistema nacional de parques nacionales y reservas privadas, para salvaguardar esta biodiversidad.

Located within the north-westerly region of Guanacaste, Horizontes Experimental is a dry forest where Raleigh, and scores of its volunteers, have been aiding the park’s rangers and researchers for the past 10 weeks. A big task of ours has been clearing various trails throughout the park; some of these newly cleared trails allow for easier access to research plots, whilst other trails will be used as recreational routes for tourists to showcase Horizontes’ natural beauty.

We have since successfully cleared an area of trees and overgrown foliage, with this space being set aside for tourists to use as a campsite. Later, using wood local to Horizontes, we designed and constructed tables, benches, and signs to decorate the campsite, direct visitors, and display the layout of the park’s experimental plots.

Localizado en la región noroccidental de Guanacaste, Horizontes Experimental es un bosque seco donde Raleigh, y decenas de sus voluntarios, han estado ayudando a los guardabosques e investigadores del parque durante las últimas 10 semanas. Una gran tarea nuestra ha estado limpiando varios senderos en todo el parque; algunos de estos senderos recientemente despejados permiten un acceso más fácil a parcelas de investigación, mientras que otros senderos se utilizarán como rutas recreativas para que los turistas exhiban la belleza natural de Horizontes.

Desde entonces hemos despejado con éxito un área de árboles y follaje cubierto, con este espacio que se reserva para que los turistas lo utilicen como lugar de campamento. Más tarde, usando madera local para Horizontes, diseñamos y construimos mesas, bancos y letreros para decorar el campamento, dirigir a los visitantes y mostrar el diseño de las parcelas experimentales del parque.

This work was an excellent way to get us sweating and put our carpentry skills to the test. However, more importantly, these additions were made in the hope of maximising eco-tourism, with the campsite providing a cheaper alternative to the onsite lodge accommodation, thus making the park an accessible destination for all environmentalists, especially locals.

An increase in local visitors would ensure the work and purpose of Horizontes continues to reach a wider audience, therefore enabling local people to become further educated about how best to protect the environment and use it sustainably so it can reach its full potential in the inevitably drier future.

Este trabajo fue una excelente manera de hacernos sudar y poner a prueba nuestras habilidades de carpintería. Sin embargo, lo más importante es que estas adiciones se hicieron con la esperanza de maximizar el ecoturismo, con el campamento ofreciendo una alternativa más económica que el alojamiento en el lugar, convirtiendo el parque en un destino accesible para todos los ambientalistas, especialmente los locales.

Un aumento en los visitantes locales aseguraría que el trabajo y el propósito de Horizontes continúe llegando a un público más amplio, lo que permitirá que la población local reciba más educación sobre la mejor manera de proteger el medio ambiente y utilizarlo de manera sostenible para que pueda alcanzar su máximo potencial en el inevitablemente más seco futuro.

It is hypothesised that rainfall will decrease by up to 50% by the year 2050 due to climate change. Jennifer Powers, along with the University of Minnesota, are investigating the possible consequences of this scenario. Horizontes Experimental serves as the host location for this vital research, which centres on the effects reduced rainfall may have on varying tree species found in the dry forest.

To simulate these conditions, roofs are put over certain plots to observe the potential repercussions of increased drought. Meanwhile, other plots are being used to better understand the use of fertilizers on tree species native to the dry forest, with the assumption being that worsening conditions in the future could signal the utility of specific fertilizers that would benefit the survival and growth of these dry forest tree species.

Se hipotetiza que la lluvia disminuirá hasta en un 50% para el año 2050 debido al cambio climático. Jennifer Powers, junto con la Universidad de Minnesota, están investigando las posibles consecuencias de este escenario. Horizontes Experimental sirve como el lugar de acogida para esta investigación vital, que se centra en los efectos que la reducción de la lluvia puede tener en diversas especies de árboles que se encuentran en el bosque seco.

Para simular estas condiciones, los techos se colocan sobre ciertas parcelas para observar las posibles repercusiones de una mayor sequía. Mientras tanto, otras parcelas se utilizan para comprender mejor el uso de fertilizantes en especies arbóreas nativas del bosque seco, con la suposición de que el empeoramiento de las condiciones en el futuro podría indicar la utilidad de fertilizantes específicos que beneficiarían la supervivencia y el crecimiento de estos bosques secos especie de árbol forestal.

Horizontes Experimental deserves tourists, not just because of the charismatic rangers and the beautiful and varying landscapes and wildlife it possesses, but, more importantly, because of the vital research being done here into the impending effects of climate change on one of the world’s most vulnerable types of environments.

Horizontes Experimental merece turistas, no solo por los carismáticos exploradores y los bellos y variados paisajes y vida silvestre que posee, sino, lo que es más importante, debido a la investigación vital que se realiza aquí sobre los efectos inminentes del cambio climático en uno de los más vulnerables del mundo tipos de ambientes.
