I signed up as a project manager on Raleigh 08H on the recommendation of my boyfriend who had been an engineer on Raleigh Brunei in 2000. I signed up because I was disillusioned with my consulting job because I felt I wasn’t ‘making a difference’.
So, the contrast was enormous when I hit Raleigh. Immediately I was making a difference: to Sabah, to Kampung Buayan, to the lives of the young people. And I was becoming different too.
I learnt the extent of my strength, compassion, resilience. I remembered how much I loved outdoorsy people. I was untethered from the trappings of a western life (status, media, time). I did manual labour and was rewarded with ‘guns’. I tried different leaderships styles until I found my own. I wrote love letters for the first time. I was very competitive during ‘Raleigh Olympics’. I made friends for life.
Every year my partner (same one!) and I talk about doing Raleigh again. We have these romantic memories from our time on Raleigh, and we know that every country/expedition/project is different, yet we are drawn to the people, power, and passion of Raleigh time and time again.
Thank you to those on Borneo 08H who were part of an amazing four months! I continue to be humbled and proud of my time with Raleigh. See you soon!
