Our Women's Week

To mark International Women’s Day, Raleigh UK have held a week of action for gender equality.
To kick off the week, we organised a workshop which discussed the many forms of unpaid labour which women are often expected to undertake, such as emotional labour. Welcoming men into the discussion enabled everyone to be aware of the role they play in combating inequalities.
Later in the week, we were fortunate enough to have international speaker and author of Octopus on a Treadmill Gifty Enright come and give a talk. Gifty shared her motto of ‘showing up’ for life and explained how we need to maintain our spiritual, mental, emotional and physical wellbeing as a foundation for a happy and successful life. She highlighted how the ‘confidence gap’ may be causing some of the shortcomings in women’s progression and that overcoming this requires us to take more risks, embrace diversity, and celebrate and elevate other women.
Gifty’s talk gave us all something to reflect on:
“Gifty addresses a topic which is prevalent in every workplace but massively underappreciated, the confidence gap. Gifty brought a new perspective on women in the workplace which introduces something that many men aren’t unaware of and many women don’t even realise is happening to them.”
“I really enjoyed the talk! I loved Gifty’s warm and personable manner and focus on balancing emotional, spiritual, physical and mental wellbeing. I think it’s really important to talk about how to try to find look after ourselves and find a balance. As a manager, it’s important to check in with our team members and encourage them to practice self-care.”
It made me think about the importance of supporting my spouse to achieve her own wellbeing and how I can be an ally in recognising the contribution of women across society.”
This International Women’s Week we are considering the pledges we can adopt in 2020 to help create an equal and more empowered world for everyone.
