4th August 2014

C1 update

Here are some updates on the teams at the beginning of phase two...

Team 1 - Batini

To start phase two, Team 1 are planning a community action day as part of their secondary project.  As well as making arrangements for this, they are also planning a debate at the local Secondary School for International Youth Day on 12th August.   Working alongside IWASH, an organization associated with SAWA, their project partner, Team 1 are performing in a health and sanitation based drama this week in their local village to help raise the awareness of good health and sanitation practices.  Their work at the school continues this week with a sports day and continued lessons on the importance of hand washing.  Team 1 continue to work with the women’s group and health and sanitation group and have started making arrangements for their other secondary projects – a kitchen garden, some awareness raising murals and rocket stove demonstrations (rocket stoves are a more efficient and environmentally friendly method of using less firewood for cooking).

Team 4 - Msanga

As International Youth Day approaches, Team 4 are busy planning some events for their village. They are organising a sports day at the local school, alongside a litter pick with some of the local youth. One of their secondary projects is a mural for which they held a competition at the local school for the design. The group is hoping to have the mural finished in time for International Youth Day so they can unveil it at the sports day. Team 4 continue their awareness raising this week with a tippy tap demonstration in the village market and a tippy tap competition at the Primary School. Another of Team 4’s secondary project is a water and sanitation campaign, producing posters and leaflets which they will distribute in the village to help work with the local community on increasing good sanitation practice.

Team 6 - Mseko

Team 6 are starting some peer education workshops with the youth in their community. They have been working alongside the local youth to plan some awareness raising sessions on water purification (such as filtering and boiling) which they will present at a football tournament they have organised for this weekend. As a result of their action research, the secondary projects which Team 6 are going to be working on include undertaking some awareness raising around the importance of using tippy taps, painting some murals about health and sanitation and building a large rocket stove at the local primary school. Rocket stoves are a more efficient and environmentally friendly method of using less firewood for cooking. As well as helping the school to build a rocket stove, Team 6 will also be doing rocket stove demonstrations in their local market and sub village.

C6 update

Team 7 - Mingara

This week Team 7 will be launching their ‘Rocket Stove’ Campaign as part of their secondary project. Rocket stoves are a more efficient and environmentally friendly method of using less firewood for cooking. The group will be promoting their use in relation to boiling water for people that do not have access to clean water sources or proper filtration systems at this time, alongside the environmental benefits and increased leisure time resulting in having to collect less wood. The team will also be delivering Tippy Tap hand washing demonstrations in a number of surrounding villages, and beginning to paint their mural at a local school. The mural will illustrate good water and sanitation practices and will involve local students in its planning, design and painting. In addition to this the team is excited to be planning for International Youth Day, in which they will hold a series of events in the community to promote the importance of youth. Team 9 – Bargish Antsi Team 9 have started painting 2 murals in their village, Bargish, as part of their secondary project. Working alongside the primary school children, the team are designing a mural to raise the awareness of the importance of hand washing to help improve health in the community. In the next week they are planning some work experience days with a local café to find out more about their local community. As in phase one, Team 9 are continuing with their school ‘water and sanitation’ sessions and their work with the womens’ group. Next week they have a youth action day planned to coincide with International Youth Day on the 12th August where they are planning a variety of awareness raising sessions alongside the Secondary school children.
