The Low Down on Raleigh’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Projects/El Vaivén en los Proyectos de Agua, Saneamiento e Higiene de Raleigh

Despite the regular stream of enthusiastic volunteers coming out to support our projects, these three month experiences are part of a much bigger project, which are put in place by the permanent Raleigh team here in Nicaragua as well as, the team back at HO in the UK.

Partnering NGO charities, which are based in country, continue to visit our project sites whilst our volunteers are no longer there to ensure our work is being sustained. Whilst our field base team organise the programs we are going to be working on next as well as, the aims we hope to achieve long term for our communities – there’s no rest for the wicked.

Mirna Medina, our Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project Officer, is from Nicaragua and has been working with Raleigh for a year and half – making her an excellent bubble of Raleigh project knowledge. Chatting to her about the projects we’re going to be working on in the coming months, she described what has already been achieved within our communities as well as, what our long term goals are for each project.

A pesar del flujo constante de voluntarios entusiastas que vienen a apoyar los proyectos, estas experiencias de tres meses son parte de un proyecto mucho más grande, que el equipo permanente de Raleigh en el país y el equipo de la sede central en el Reino Unido ejecutan en Nicaragua. .

Las organizaciones e instituciones socias, que tienen su sede en el país, continúan visitando los sitios del proyecto, cuando los voluntarios ya no están allí para garantizar la sostenibilidad del trabajo de Raleigh. Mientras que las personas en la oficina de país están ocupadas organizando los programas en los que que trabajaremos a continuación y los objetivos que esperamos lograr a largo plazo para estas comunidades: no hay descanso para los malvados.

Mirna Medina, oficial del proyecto WASH, es de Nicaragua y ha estado trabajando con Raleigh durante un año y medio, lo que la convierte en una excelente burbuja de conocimiento sobre los proyectos. Al conversar con ella, describió lo que ya se ha logrado dentro de las comunidades de Raleigh y cuáles son los objetivos a largo plazo para cada proyecto.

What do we do during Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects?/¿Qué hace Raleigh durante los proyectos de Saneamiento e Higiene del Agua?

Many communities in Nicaragua do not have access to safe drinking water meaning, they have to walk for hours a day to collect water to drink, cook and wash with. We work in these rural areas to help build water systems, which will allow the community members to have easier access to water…

‘In Expedition we work specifically on water supplies. We aim to help communities restore their water system and also create knowledge about water systems to empower the community members’.

‘Depending on the community’s needs, we will set a specific time in which to build the water system because the community will need it as soon as possible. We also create the ability for communities to keep implementing the water system in the long term. The communities have links with local project partners who support them’.

Muchas comunidades en Nicaragua no tienen acceso a agua potable, lo que significa que tienen que caminar durante horas al día para recolectar agua para beber, cocinar y lavarse. Raleigh trabaja en estas áreas rurales para ayudar a construir sistemas de agua, lo que permitirá a los miembros de la comunidad tener un acceso más fácil al agua…

‘En Expedición trabajamos específicamente en suministros de agua. Nuestro objetivo es ayudar a las comunidades a restaurar su sistema de agua y también crear conocimiento sobre los sistemas de agua para empoderar a los miembros de la comunidad.

‘Dependiendo de las necesidades de la comunidad, estableceremos un momento específico para construir el sistema de agua porque la comunidad lo necesitará lo antes posible. También creamos la capacidad para que las comunidades sigan implementando el sistema de agua a largo plazo. Las comunidades tienen vínculos con socios locales del proyecto que los apoyan’.

What was achieved in our previous Water, Sanitation and Hygiene projects?/¿Qué se logró en los proyectos de WASH anteriores?

‘Last cycle we worked in two different communities, in both we achieved the water systems being rehabilitated’.

‘The impact the community members received from having the cultural exchange of having volunteers there was huge. You can see it in the kids and in the schools. The volunteers go to the schools to deliver sessions on hygiene habits, hand washing, how to avoid spreading germs etc. and the kids enjoy having the volunteers there which means they pay more attention’.

‘El último ciclo trabajamos en dos comunidades diferentes, en ambos logramos que los sistemas de agua se rehabilitaran’.

‘El impacto que los miembros de la comunidad tuvieron al tener el intercambio cultural de tener voluntarios allí fue enorme. Puedes verlo en los niños y en las escuelas. Los voluntarios van a las escuelas para impartir sesiones sobre hábitos de higiene, lavado de manos, cómo evitar la propagación de gérmenes, etc. y los niños disfrutan de tener a los voluntarios allí, lo que significa que prestan más atención’.

What happens between one project ending and the next starting?/¿Qué ocurre entre el final de un proyecto y el siguiente inicio?

‘Between the previous volunteers leaving and the new volunteers arriving, the project partners do follow ups with the communities we’ve worked with previously to make sure their systems are still working and to ensure the water suppliers have been meeting with the community’.

‘In the Programs Team at the office, we prepare which communities we’re going to be working with next’.

‘Entre los voluntarios anteriores que se van y los nuevos voluntarios que llegan, los socios del proyecto hacen seguimientos con las comunidades con las que hemos trabajado para asegurarse de que sus sistemas sigan funcionando y asegurarse de que los proveedores de agua se hayan reunido con la comunidad’.

‘En el Equipo de Programas de la oficina, preparamos las comunidades con las que vamos a trabajar a continuación’.

Where will we be working next?/¿Dónde trabajaremos después?

Over the next three months, we will be working with two different communities in Nicaragua building water systems and reinforcing knowledge on hygiene and sanitation…

‘We have worked with the first community with ICS for 6 months previously. We will be continuing what we’ve already done with them as well as, refreshing their knowledge. In the second Water, Sanitation and Hygiene community, we want to work on the water system and start building knowledge – we will be starting from scratch’.

Durante los próximos tres meses, Raleigh trabajará con dos comunidades diferentes en Nicaragua construyendo sistemas de agua y reforzando el conocimiento sobre higiene y saneamiento … 

‘Hemos trabajado con la primera comunidad con ICS durante 6 meses anteriormente. Continuaremos con lo que ya hemos hecho con ellos y refrescando sus conocimientos. En la segunda comunidad de WASH, queremos trabajar en el sistema de agua y comenzar a construir conocimiento; comenzaremos desde cero’.

On asking what Mirna’s most fulfilling moment with Raleigh was she answered ‘how much the communities value your presence and your work. They are more than willing to work with you to make a change, it’s so rewarding!’
