‘Women are Free. We are Not Slaves to Anyone’: Learning About Female History in El Pegador and Nueva Esperanza/‘Las Mujeres estan Libres. No somos Esclavas de Nadie’: Aprendizajes Sobre la Historia de las Mujeres en el Pegador y Nueva Esperanza

The crowd laughed endlessly as we performed our play inspired by one of the most famous Nicaraguan women – Rafaela Herrera.

For over 100 years Women’s Day has been celebrated across the globe and to embrace the tradition, we decided to host a special day to commemorate the achievements of inspirational Nicaraguan women and to introduce the role that women have played in global history. Our day included arts and crafts for children, traditional Nicaraguan games, dances and poetry.

La audencia reia mientras nosotros interpretabamos nuestra dramatización que tomó inspiración de la mujer más famosa de Nicaragua – Rafaela Herrera.

Hace 100 años se celebra el Día de Las Mujeres por todo el mundo y, para continuar esta tradición, organizamos un día especial que conmemoro los logros de mujeres nicaragüenses e introdujo el papel que las mujeres han tenido en la historia mundial. Nuestro día incluyó dibujos para los niños, bailes nicaragüenses, juegos y poemas. 

Armed with chairs as paddle boats, torches as fire, and balloons as gunshots, our re-enactment of the deep-rooted story of Rafaela Herrera was warmly received by the on-looking crowd of entrepreneurs and inspired women. To introduce our intercultural team, the British half of our group gave presentations on famous Nicaraguan women whilst our Nicaraguan counterparts presented on famous British women such as, Mary Seacole.

Usamos sillas como barcos, focos como fuego, y globos como disparos, nuestra dramatización de la historia sobre Rafaela Herrera fue buen recibido por la audiencia que consistió de emprendedores, y mujeres inspiradas. Para introducir nuestro equipo intercultural, los británicos dieron una presentación sobre las mujeres nicaragüenses, mientras los nicaragüenses hablaron sobre las mujeres británicos como Mary Seacole.

This was followed by the unveiling of a mural that displayed a globe representing equality and encompassed a time wave of historical events of women’s rights, successes and innovations. This was well received by the community as they appreciated the time and effort we had put in to create something that could be an integral part of successive Women’s Days.

Después, revelamos un mural que mostró el mundo y represento la igualdad y una línea de fechas sobre los momentos históricos para los derechos de la mujeres, sus logros e innovaciones. La comunidad le gustaba ya que se entiendo el tiempo y energía dimos para crear algo que se puede usar en el futuro.

The involvement of the community demonstrated the success of the event. Children of all ages drew their favourite women and a wall was dedicated to photos of women from the community sharing their stories and inspirational quotes – we ensured that all members were respected and remembered.

A resultado del incluso do la comunidad en nuestra celebración estuvo exitosa. Los niños dibujaron sus mujeres favoritas y dedicamos una pared a las ciudadanas quien compartió su historia y frases sobre ser mujer.

It was a wonderful day and a warm welcome into the communities of El Pegador and Nueva Esperanza. We’re looking forward to motivating the entrepreneurs in establishing successful businesses and putting on more events to help the two communities prosper.

Fue un día agradable y fue una bienvenido amigable en los pueblos de El Pegador y Nueva Esperanza. Esperamos con ansia a motivar los emprendedores, establecer negocios exitosos y organizar más celebraciones para que las dos comunidades prosperen.
