In Nicaragua, our work focuses on youth entrepreneurship, improving community managed water and sanitation systems and protecting natural resources.
Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Like many developing countries, its young people are struggling to find work. We support young entrepreneurs to set up small businesses in their communities which benefit themselves and the people around them. In turn, their communities can become more resilient to social and environmental change.
Only 63% of the rural population of Nicaragua has access to clean drinking water and only 34% has access to improved sanitation. All our projects are based in rural communities, not only as they have the greatest need, but also because of their willingness to engage in sustainable development.
Access to water and sanitation and effective use of natural resources are closely linked. We work with partners and communities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that people need to improve the management of these resources.
We have been running programmes in Nicaragua for over ten years. Building strong relationships with partners and communities. Giving thousands of young people experience of sustainable development work, whilst developing skills that they will carry with them throughout their lifetime.
What you can do
Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. It is also home to the continent’s largest cloud forest , which houses jaguars, eagles and spider monkeys, as well as over 150,000 species of insect. However, this breath-taking country is ranked third in the world for vulnerability to climate change.
Volunteering in Nicaragua will inspire and enable you to have a lasting positive impact on some of the poorest communities in the world. The projects you could get involved with range from trekking the jagged peaks of Irazu and Turrialba to working with entrepreneurs in Los Copales to develop soy milk businesses.
