“To go from watching my host mum struggle in her daily life, carrying a 25 litre water can to the river numerous times a day to seeing her turn on the tap 4m away from her front door at the end of the project was incredible.”
– Dougie, volunteered in Nicaragua & Costa Rica
Welcome, bienvenidos, to Nicaragua & Costa Rica
These two vastly different countries make up a colourful and lively area of the world: Central America.
Costa Rica is famed for its friendly welcoming people and its stunning environments – it also contains 5% of the planet’s biodiversity within its borders. Costa Rica aims to be the first carbon neutral country by 2021. Despite this, the country still faces problems with inequality in rural areas.
Bordering Nicaragua’s landscape features large lakes (Lake Nicaragua is one of the world’s largest) and volcanoes. With 70 different ecosystems, Nicaragua is known for its ecological diversity. It is the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere so there’s a real need for us to be there.
Raleigh has worked closely with communities in both countries for the last 10 years to create long-lasting, sustainable change.
Join us on Expedition here and help us make postive change in two of the world’s most dazzling countries.
What could I be doing?
Volunteer on a Raleigh Expedition in Nicaragua & Costa Rica and experience two very different countries and cultures. Find yourself working with rural communities in the very heart of Nicaragua or in remote areas of Costa Rica, working to protect one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet.
On a 10 or 7 week Expedition, you will work on a water and sanitation project in Northern Nicaragua – bringing clean water to rural communities. On a 5 week Expedition, you could help to construct a school building for an indigenous community in Costa Rica.
On the Environment phase, you will get to call one of Costa Rica’s national park’s home. You could be helping improve access to the park for park rangers, communities and tourists.
Nicaragua and Costa Rica’s stunning volcanic landscapes present the ideal location for an adventure phase. You will trek in either Nicaragua or Costa Rica and you may even get the chance to trek from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean! Not many people can say they’ve done that!
Did you know?
