If you’re looking for your next adventure, you’ve just found it…
This is not a holiday.
This is an expedition into life.
Raleigh expeditions are about bringing people together from all over the world to inspire lasting change. They are an opportunity for you to work on remote community and environmental projects and face adventure challenges in some of the most incredible areas of the world. Our expeditions are all about variety.
This is why our expeditions include different people, projects, locations and challenges. There will be people like you and people from different backgrounds and cultures, including local volunteers from the expedition countries. Together you’ll be a team with a common aim; to bring energy and inspiration to create the world that we want.
Yes it’s international volunteering, but not as you know it
Our experience has taught us that change is best created through bringing together young people and local communities. You’ll be living and working alongside people in remote rural communities. You’ll learn from one another and share traditions and customs. The communities where we work aren’t always the easiest to get to. Indeed, it’s often because they are so hard to access that they need our support. We work in stunning natural environments; environments that you wouldn’t get to access as a tourist and that need protecting.
Expedition is a personal adventure for our volunteers too. Every day will be different. And every day you’ll be challenged and supported by our teams and staff to learn and develop new skills. Skills that will help you grow and set you up for the future.
How does it work?
Our volunteer expeditions last five, seven or 10 weeks. They are made up of a variety of community, adventure and environment phases. What phases you work on will depend on where you go and when. We ask you to be as flexible as possible.
On our 10 week expeditions in Malaysian Borneo, Nicaragua & Costa Rica, and Tanzania you will do all three of the different phases. On a seven week expedition in these countries, you will do two of the three phases. On a five week expedition, you will do a community or an environment phase and a shorter adventure challenge.
As we base our projects on the local need for our work, we are not currently doing environmental projects in Nepal. Instead, on a 10 week expedition in Nepal, you will do two community phases and an adventure phase. On the seven week expedition, you will do an adventure and community phase and on the five week expedition you will do a community and shorter adventure challenge.
An expedition, in three words?
Raleigh has a ‘never give up attitude’ and we expect our volunteers to share it with us. Expeditions can be tough at times but they are also fun. Our staff, our volunteer managers and your fellow team members will support you throughout. Together you’ll encourage one another to do things and achieve things you never thought possible.
Want to be inspired by people, new environments and new ways of approaching some of the world’s challenges? On expedition you’ll meet people from all over the world. These new friends will open you up to lots of different points of view. And, as for the places we work, once you see how special some of these areas are, you’ll see why they need preserving.
We support and encourage you to have an impact where it matters most. Last year over 100,000 people from around the world benefitted from our programmes. Our expedition volunteers help empower local communities; by improving people’s access to safe water and sanitation, building stronger communities and protecting the world’s resources. This is your chance to create change in the communities we work in and develop skills for yourself.
And us? We’re Raleigh International. We have over 30 years’ experience of bringing together young people and communities to create lasting change. It’s the people we work with, from volunteers to project partners to community members that inspire us to get stuck into the challenges that other organisations won’t tackle.
