Our new UK programme

Join other young people on our first ever UK volunteer programme. It is time to get out and take urgent action to drive the green recovery and address the climate emergency.

In 2021, we will launch a new programme designed to increase your skills, knowledge, and ability to contribute directly to addressing the climate emergency. You will learn how to mobilise other young people, influence the people making big decisions, and change behaviour where you live that negatively impact the natural environment.

It will be a volunteer experience that you will never forget. You will build memories and friendships and develop leadership and teamwork skills to apply to your future career and personal life. Using our expertise in youth leadership and youth environmental campaigning, we will partner with a recognised conservation organisation to deliver this vital piece of work.

  • Volunteer

Aged 25 and over? For each programme the following roles are available:

  • Project Support Coordinator

UK young people: Ignite | Equip | Mobilise

The overall goal of our new UK programme is to create a national movement of young people, partner organisations and communities united in taking action which builds a greener and fairer society in the UK and around the world. In 2021, you will have the option to take part in an immersive 2-week conservation project, and from 2022 a longer 4-week option.  All rooted in Raleigh International’s decades of expertise in experiential and outdoors education.

There are three parts to our new UK programme: Ignite, Equip and Mobilise:

Ignite &Equip / Conservation projects

Play an active role in UK environmental conservation and combating climate change. Learn how people and organisations around the UK are protecting local environments and coordinating internationally to tackle the climate crisis.

Working in a group, you will provide vital support to our UK partners by delivering work that is directly contributing to their conservation priorities. You could learn about and take part in activities such as rewilding, reforestation, restoration, habitat, and water-course management. You will also have the opportunity to participate in mindfulness and wellbeing sessions, as well as focused personal and professional development activities.

Mobilise / Campaign training

Develop your own campaigning and social action skills to help mobilise people in your local community and young people around the world to take action to protect our planet.

Working individually and in groups with other young people, you will undertake practical and theoretical training in social and environmental campaigning and awareness raising. You will learn how to take action yourself, how to mobilise others to take action, and how to influence decision makers to take action which drives the green recovery and addresses the climate emergency. You will hear from people experienced in environmental campaign and green action.

Action Not Excuses

Following the UK programme you will be invited to take part in our global environmental campaign, Action Not Excuses. You will gain exclusive access to Raleigh International’s Global Campaign Platform where you can continue to develop your skills, take and coordinate action, and connect with young people from around the world. You will have the opportunity to continue to take action on our three key themes: Fight for Zero Waste, Reverse Deforestation and Create Green Jobs. Additional training and support sessions will be available via digital campaign conferences and events for former volunteers in order to create and enact plans for taking action in your local area and beyond.

Where will the UK programme take place?

It will take place in a remote area of the UK. We are currently developing projects with a variety of conservation organisations across the UK (Scotland, Wales and the north of England).

How long will the UK programme be?

2021 – 2 weeks

The 2-week programme comprises three components: Ignite, Equip and Mobilise.

2022 – 2 or 4 weeks

The longer 4-week programme will include a youth leadership challenge – an exciting remote trek.

When will the UK programme run in 2021?

All dates are subject to local and national Covid-19 restrictions and safety measures.

  • June 2021
  • July/August 2021
  • September 2021
  • November 2021

What is the UK programme fundraising target?

As we are a charity, we encourage our volunteers to fundraise to take part in this programme. These fundraising amounts will go towards this programme, your place and Raleigh International’s wider initiatives.

Our new UK programme is about more than what can be achieved in 2 or 4 weeks. It is about creating a global movement of young people to bring about lasting change. Your fundraising will help us not only to cover the costs of your placement, but to support young people around the world to tackle the climate crisis. Bursaries will also be available to support some volunteers with their fundraising.

What safety measures will be in place on the UK programme?

Safety is at the heart of everything that we do. We will make sure that the programme is delivered safely, and in line with the latest Covid-19 restrictions.

We are externally accredited to British Safety 8848, the Gap Year Association (USA), and Year Out Group (UK).
