South Africa spending money

Raleigh’s guidelines for spending money

All costs including food, accommodation and transport are fully included in Raleigh Expeditions. Therefore, the amount of spending money you bring with you is entirely down to personal choice, and would cover optional snacks, supplies and souvenirs.

You will be working with a variety of people from different backgrounds and with rural, disadvantaged communities. Due to this, we need to be sensitive, and therefore each project has its own spending money policy, which will be explained on arrival in country. We encourage you to be considerate and respectful; spending minimal amounts while on project will allow for a fully immersive experience.

We strongly recommend only bringing a minimal amount of cash (approx. R200). Most places accept card payments, and you can also withdraw cash from ATMs in Hoedspruit at minimal charge, so we suggest having funds available in your bank account.

It is difficult to exchange money in Hoedspruit, so please exchange money in advance if you would like to bring cash (maximum recommended amount to bring in cash is R200).

Spending Opportunities

Throughout the expedition there are various opportunities to buy additional snacks, souvenirs or top up on extra kit/toiletries. This will include short town trips into Hoedspruit, as well as the opportunity to visit small shops on some projects. Venturers will be briefed on arrival in country as to the spending money policies on each project.

At the end of the expedition there is also an option to do a Guided Kruger Day Trip. This trip is at your own expense (approx. R2000, cash only) plus lunch money (approx. R200, card accepted), plus opportunities to buy souvenirs (optional, card accepted). Cash for the trip can be withdrawn from an ATM in Hoedspruit once it has been confirmed.

Suggested Amounts

Raleigh covers everything you need throughout expedition, so spending money is an optional extra and entirely down to personal choice. Remember, we recommend only travelling with a maximum of R200 in cash.
