8 WEEKS.
4 PHASES.
1 VIBRANT
Costa Rica.
The 8-week Costa Rica Expedition is Raleigh’s most complete Costa Rica experience — four Challenge Phases taking you from indigenous communities in the mountains to conservation wetlands to a multi-day trek across the country ending with The Final Challenge. You’ll live simply, work hard, and cross Costa Rica on foot. No experience needed.
COMMUNITY · ENVIRONMENT · ENDURANCE · FINAL CHALLENGE
THE JOURNEY
FOUR PHASES.
ONE DIRECTION:
FORWARD.
COMMUNITY
ACTION
You’ll spend around 2 weeks on one or more of several transformative infrastructure and educational projects that address the urgent needs of remote and indigenous communities.
Construction skills Technical training from local partners Project development & planning Problem-solving with limited resources
01
ENDURANCE
TREK
The 12-day trek takes you from misty cloud forests in the mountains, down through tropical lowlands, and out to the Pacific coast, where it ends with hands-on turtle conservation. A journey through Costa Rica’s wild and beautiful ecosystems.
Orienteering & route-finding and planning Survival, first aid & camp craft skills Physical fitness techniques Leadership & decision-making under fatigue
02
03
ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
For around 2 weeks you’ll help to support the maintenance and conservation of Costa Rica’s incredibly biodiverse ecosystems. You’ll work alongside and under the instruction of local communities.
Species monitoring, surveys & data collection Habitat management Sustainability education Project management
04
THE FINAL
CHALLENGE
Put every skill you have developed across the course of Expedition into practice over 4 days. Together with a team work together to achieve a goal. Set out a plan, meet the targets, push yourself, problem solve challenges independently. This could be project based or endurance based. You’ll find out when you get there.
Physical and mental resilience Teamwork, communication & leadership Problem-solving & adaptability Accountability & responsibility
This phase is completely self-led. Staff will be there only for health and safety support but will act as part of the group.
THE 8-WEEKER
EXAMPLE
ITINERARY.
The full 8-week Expedition with Raleigh in Costa Rica will look like this. You’ll get more detail nearer the time and the order in which you do each Challenge Phase may vary.
3–4 DAYS
INTRODUCTION TO EXPEDITION
For this you’ll be at our Fieldbase in Turrialba. Full of activities and tasks designed so you get to know your fellow Venturers and build trust rapidly to prepare for Expedition life. You’ll receive essential training on topics like health and safety, wildlife briefings, information about project objectives and cultural awareness.
13 DAYS
COMMUNITY
ACTION
Venturers work together on community projects agreed with partners and community leaders. Your accommodation will mostly likely be a school or community building and use the facilities attached to it (bathrooms, showers, kitchen).
2–3 DAYS
CHANGEOVER
At the end of each phase, everyone returns to Fieldbase in Turrialba for a few days before moving on to your next Challenge Phase. You’ll catch up with the rest of the Expedition team and start to prepare. Groups will change between each phase, this is an important part of the Expedition experience.
12 DAYS
ENDURANCE
TREK
On this trek, every day is different, including the weather and the accommodation. Go from camping in mountainous areas and sleeping under the stars to bunking in a community centre.
