RALEIGH EXPEDITION FAQs
What is a Raleigh Expedition?
A Raleigh Expedition puts 18–24-year-olds into remote locations to work on real Community and Environmental projects, then tests you on an Endurance Trek. It runs for 4 or 8 weeks, across three cycles a year, in Borneo, Costa Rica and South Africa.
How long are Expeditions?
4 or 8 weeks – Borneo, Costa Rica or South Africa. Pick your length, pick your destination.
What projects will I work on?
Two kinds: Community Action and Environmental Protection.
Community Action: puts you on grassroots development work — improving schools, supporting local organisations, working alongside rural communities. Environmental Protection: hands-on conservation work, helping protect wildlife and support biodiversity.
On the 8-week Expedition, you do both. On the 4 week, you do one.
Who can join a Raleigh Expedition?
Anyone aged 18–24, regardless of background. If you’re up for something that’ll genuinely test you, and you want to come back different, Raleigh Expedition is for you.
What accommodation will I stay in?
Simple and practical — the exact setup depends on your country, but expect a community building, a campsite, or a school.
Expect to:
- Sleep in tents or community buildings, your own roll mat and sleeping bag.
- Use basic toilets – sometimes squat toilets.
- Wash in cold showers, where there’s a shower at all.
- Cook as a team on gas stoves and trangias.
- Eat Raleigh Rations: simple, sustainable, and it keeps you going.
This isn’t a hardship you push through to get to the good part. It is the good part.
How do I apply?
A short form: where, when, why. That’s it. It’s not a job application. From there, an Expedition Advisor takes you through everything else.
What skills will I gain?
Leadership. Collaboration. Grit. Global Outlook – to name but a few. The kind of skills most people spend years trying to build — you’ll have started building them in weeks.
