How the Sharabata Community is Improving Access to Education

Education for everyone: How the Sharabata community is improving access to education for young indigenous members/Educación para todos: cómo la comunidad de Sharabata está mejorando el acceso a la educación para los jóvenes miembros indígenas

It can take more than 10 years for the Ministry of Education in Costa Rica to build infrastructure in indigenous territories, which serves as a huge barrier for furthering education for young people living there. Raleigh’s involvement has helped the Sharabata community to speed up this process by working in collaboration with local community members and volunteers to build five new secondary school classrooms.

El Ministerio de Educación de Costa Rica puede tardar más de 10 años en construir infraestructura en los territorios indígenas, lo que sirve como una gran barrera para promover la educación de los jóvenes que viven allí. La participación de Raleigh ha ayudado a la comunidad de Sharabata a acelerar este proceso trabajando en colaboración con miembros de la comunidad local y voluntarios para construir cinco nuevas aulas de escuela secundaria.

Education is fundamental for the economic development of indigenous territories because it allows young people to obtain professional careers and further develop their own communities. Raleigh hopes to increase access to further education and increase opportunities for young people.

La educación es fundamental para el desarrollo económico de los territorios indígenas porque permite que los jóvenes obtengan carreras profesionales y desarrollen más sus propias comunidades. Raleigh espera aumentar el acceso a la educación superior y aumentar las oportunidades para los jóvenes.

Whilst working in the Sharabata, Raleigh’s volunteers have witnessed the impact this project has had on young members of the indigenous community:

“We spoke to a young man living in the community who is going into his 8^th year of high school. He previously studied for six years at the primary school located 30 minutes from his house. After finishing primary school, he attended high school in Siruni, where he eventually stopped attending due to lack of facilities. He didn’t attend high school for the following four years, as it did not compare to his primary school experience. Additionally, he had to travel 4-5 hours on a Monday morning by foot to get to the high school in time and wake up around 1 am. This walk to the school was dangerous as many of the students had to cross the Chirripo river. He is extremely thankful that he and the community now have the new high school. Furthermore, he is grateful to all of the parents of the students for their generous donations towards the school, including the land and wood.”

Mientras trabajaban en Sharabata, los voluntarios de Raleigh han sido testigos del impacto que este proyecto ha tenido en los miembros jóvenes de la comunidad indígena:

“Hablamos con un joven que vive en la comunidad y está entrando a su octavo año de escuela secundaria. Previamente estudió durante seis años en la escuela primaria ubicada a 30 minutos de su casa. Después de terminar la escuela primaria, asistió a la escuela secundaria en Siruni, donde finalmente dejó de asistir debido a la falta de instalaciones. No asistió a la escuela secundaria durante los siguientes cuatro años, ya que no se comparaba con su experiencia en la escuela primaria. Además, tuvo que viajar de 4 a 5 horas un lunes por la mañana a pie para llegar a la escuela secundaria a tiempo y despertarse alrededor de la 1 a.m. Esta caminata a la escuela era peligrosa ya que muchos de los estudiantes tenían que cruzar el río Chirripó. Él está extremadamente agradecido de que él y la comunidad ahora tengan la nueva escuela secundaria. Además, está agradecido a todos los padres de los estudiantes por sus generosas donaciones a la escuela, incluyendo la tierra y la madera.”

Our volunteers have discovered that this project in Sharabata is not only helping students in the community, but has also made a positive impact on the lives of others involved in the project. After arriving in Uluk Kicha, they were introduced to someone who they never expected to become so close to.

Nuestros voluntarios han descubierto que este proyecto en Sharabata no solo está ayudando a los estudiantes en la comunidad, sino que también ha tenido un impacto positivo en las vidas de otras personas involucradas en el proyecto. Después de llegar a Uluk Kicha, les presentaron a alguien de quien nunca esperaban estar tan cerca.

After only a few days of delicious food in the company of their cook, she had become a fully integrated part of our team. Introducing Mercedes, the ‘mama of the group’. Fully embracing the Raleigh spirit, Mercedes is always caring for the volunteers, be it with food or great company. On talking to Mercedes, the group was interested to hear about her Raleigh experience and the impact it has had on her life.

Después de unos días de deliciosa comida en compañía de su cocinera, se había convertido en una parte totalmente integrada de nuestro equipo. Presentamos a Mercedes, la ‘mamá del grupo’. Fiel al espíritu de Raleigh, Mercedes siempre se preocupa por los voluntarios, ya sea con comida o con una gran compañía. Al hablar con Mercedes, el grupo estaba interesado en conocer su experiencia en Raleigh y el impacto que ha tenido en su vida.

“Since I started working for Raleigh, I feel more secure in myself and more confident in my abilities. This experience has made me realise that we are all the same, no matter where we are from, and it has made me feel like part of a family.”

“It has been very interesting to live and work with different people, it has meant we have learnt about different cultures and I feel comfortable to share my knowledge and experience and make new friendships here. It has been a joy to watch the volunteers eat all the food I prepare because I make it with lots of love and it makes me feel part of their lives.”

“Desde que comencé a trabajar para Raleigh, me siento más seguro de mí mismo y más confiado en mis habilidades. Esta experiencia me ha hecho darme cuenta de que todos somos iguales, sin importar de dónde somos, y me ha hecho sentir como parte de una familia.” 

“Ha sido muy interesante vivir y trabajar con diferentes personas, ha significado que hemos aprendido sobre diferentes culturas y me siento cómodo al compartir mi conocimiento y experiencia y hacer nuevas amistades aquí. Ha sido una alegría ver a los voluntarios comer toda la comida que preparo porque la hago con mucho amor y me hace sentir parte de sus vidas.”

Mercedes’ son has also been working alongside the volunteers to help build the school in the community. “It has been nice to have the opportunity to share this experience with him and teach him to enjoy every moment in his life because that will help him grow as a person.”

El hijo de Mercedes también ha estado trabajando junto a los voluntarios para ayudar a construir la escuela en la comunidad. “Ha sido agradable tener la oportunidad de compartir esta experiencia con él y enseñarle a disfrutar cada momento de su vida porque eso lo ayudará a crecer como persona”.

In Raleigh, building relationships is really important. The bond that our volunteers have formed with Mercedes is just one example of how people in Raleigh can come together to learn from each other. “We are so grateful to Mercedes and we would like to shine a light on the people on the ground, helping us to make a difference in the Sharabata community, and show how Raleigh touches the lives of more people than we realise.”

En Raleigh, construir relaciones es realmente importante. El vínculo que nuestros voluntarios han formado con Mercedes es solo un ejemplo de cómo la gente en Raleigh puede unirse para aprender unos de otros. “Estamos muy agradecidos con Mercedes y nos gustaría iluminar a la gente en el terreno, ayudándonos a marcar la diferencia en la comunidad de Sharabata, y mostrar cómo Raleigh toca las vidas de más personas de lo que creemos”.
