Engineering a sustainable future for communities in Costa Rica / Ingeniería de un futuro sostenible para las comunidades en Costa Rica

VolkerFitzpatrick is an engineering and construction company based in the UK. This is the third time in five years that VolkerFitzpatrick have supported Raleigh projects in Borneo, Tanzania and Costa Rica. This summer, VolkerFitzpatrick’s Max, Alvaro and Hayden will be volunteering with us. VolkerFitzpatrick es una empresa de ingeniería y construcción con sede en el Reino Unido. Esta es la tercera vez en cinco años que VolkerFitzpatrick apoya los proyectos de Raleigh en Borneo, Tanzania y Costa Rica. Este verano, Max, Alvaro y Hayden de VolkerFitzpatrick estarán trabajando como voluntarios con nosotros. “I wanted to volunteer for this expedition because it is an opportunity to challenge myself in new environments and make a positive impact on a community in need. These students are volunteering with Raleigh International as part of the global engineering module during the third year of their studies. Junto a este grupo se encuentran 11 estudiantes de ingeniería civil de la Universidad de Newcastle. Estos estudiantes se ofrecen como voluntarios en Raleigh International como parte del módulo de ingeniería global durante el tercer año de sus estudios.

Tsirbakla is situated in the Alto Chirripó Indigenous Territory. Currently, the community has a teacher working with kindergarten children, but they do not have a classroom. On sunny days, lessons are held under a tree and when it rains they use a dining hall as a makeshift classroom. Our volunteers will work alongside community members to build a space for the kindergarten children to learn and will help run workshops with parents associations on managing and maintaining school infrastructure in the future. Tsirbakla está situado en el territorio indígena Alto Chirripó. Actualmente, la comunidad tiene un maestro que trabaja con niños de kindergarten, pero no tienen un salón de clases. En los días soleados, las clases se llevan a cabo bajo un árbol y cuando llueve, usan un comedor como un aula improvisada. Nuestros voluntarios trabajarán junto con los miembros de la comunidad para construir un espacio para que los niños de kindergarten aprendan y ayudarán a organizar talleres con las asociaciones de padres sobre cómo administrar y mantener la infraestructura escolar en el futuro. On the southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, two other groups of volunteers are helping with natural resource management projects in Golfito National Wildlife Refuge and Piedras Blancas National Park. These two sanctuaries protect the region’s biodiversity and our volunteers will be assisting rangers with trail maintenance and help run environmental awareness activities in schools near the national park. En la costa sur del Pacífico de Costa Rica, otros dos grupos de voluntarios están ayudando con proyectos de manejo de recursos naturales en el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Golfito y el Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas. Estos dos santuarios protegen la biodiversidad de la región y nuestros voluntarios ayudarán a los guardaparques con el mantenimiento de senderos y ayudarán a llevar a cabo actividades de concienciación ambiental en las escuelas cercanas al parque nacional.

All our groups will finish their five weeks in Costa Rica with a Youth Leadership Trek. The route will take volunteers across beautiful landscapes and challenging hills of the Turrubares region, covering 70km in just six days. The Youth Leadership Trek offers the opportunity for young people to develop their leadership and orientation skills whilst encouraging them to work as a team in challenging situations. Todos nuestros grupos terminarán sus cinco semanas en Costa Rica con un Youth Leadership Trek. La ruta llevará a voluntarios a través de hermosos paisajes y desafiantes colinas de la región de Turrubares, que cubren 70km en solo seis días. Youth Leadership Trek ofrece a los jóvenes la oportunidad de desarrollar sus habilidades de liderazgo y orientación, al tiempo que los anima a trabajar en equipo en situaciones difíciles. Before travelling to their project sites, our volunteers completed their induction at the Käpäcläjui Indigenous Training Center in Grano de Oro, Turrialba. Over three days they prepared for life on expedition, got to know each other over plenty of energisers and discovered which projects they will be working on. Antes de viajar a los sitios de sus proyectos, nuestros voluntarios completaron su inducción en el Centro de Capacitación Indígena Käpäcläjui en Grano de Oro, Turrialba. Durante tres días se prepararon para la vida en una expedición, se conocieron entre sí por muchos estimulantes y descubrieron en qué proyectos trabajarían. 

The volunteers have now started work on their projects and we will be keeping you updated on their progress over the next few weeks. Los voluntarios ya comenzaron a trabajar en sus proyectos y los mantendremos informados sobre su progreso en las próximas semanas.
