Here are 5 Things You Might Not Know About Borneo
As we are heading back to the tropical paradise of Malaysian Borneo to kick start our Expeditions in February, we thought you might like to know what makes this island such a special destination for volunteers and travellers interested in conservation, biodiversity, rich cultures and Indigenous history.
Raleigh International is returning to Borneo!
That’s right! In February 2025, we are relaunching our Expedition in Malaysian Borneo.
It has been 7 years since our departure from this tropical island, and now we will be continuing our 30-year-strong legacy in the state of Sabah, where we will work on community and environmental projects that will leave a positive, lasting impact on local communities and ecosystems.
Borneo is a place full of natural wonder, rich cultures and strong indigenous identities. There are a whole host of factors that make Borneo a fantastic destination to volunteer in on your gap year, especially for budding environmentalists.
Here Are 5 Facts You Might Not Know About Borneo
1. The World’s Oldest Rainforest
Did you know that Borneo is home to the world’s oldest rainforest?
Borneo’s rainforest is older than the Amazon. It is estimated to be more than 140 million years old and has become home to some of the tallest tropical trees in the world, such as the dipterocarp species. Among the forest’s inhabitants are rare and endangered plants, like the world’s largest flower (Rafflesia arnoldii).
This incredible ecosystem isn’t just home to plants. Countless unique wildlife species find safety and shelter under the dense canopy and in old-growth trees.
2. Incredible Biodiversity
One of Borneo’s most recognisable residents is the orangutan. Sadly, it is also one of the most critically endangered species with just 55,000 or fewer Bornean orangutans left in the world. This is largely due to deforestation, habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict and climate change, all of which our Venturers will be working on local solutions for.
Borneo is also home to unique species like pygmy elephants (which are around 30% smaller than their Asian elephant cousins), proboscis monkeys (famous for their distinctively bulbous noses) and marine life like sea turtles, sting rays and parrot fish.
3. Rich Cultural Heritage
Borneo is home to 18 million people and more than 50 distinct Indigenous ethnic groups, each with their own language, customs and traditions. This makes the island a hub for diverse architecture, cultural symbols, belief systems, artwork and festivals.
The annual Harvest Festival, known as Pesta Kaamatan, is a significant cultural event celebrated primarily by the Kadazan-Dusun and Murut people in Sabah. Traditionally, the festival is a way to celebrate and show gratitude for a successful harvest and is a vibrant showcase of local beliefs and communal life.
With Raleigh, you will get the opportunity to work alongside Indigenous Dusun communities and work on infrastructure building that will support and improve their daily lives.
4. Environmental Challenges and Conservation Efforts
One major crisis facing Malaysian Borneo is deforestation driven by the palm oil industry and logging. These industries pose a direct threat to the island’s unique habitats and species.
Our involvement in conservation projects helps to support local communities and protect critical habitats against threats to biodiversity. The work we do is incredibly important. Raleigh’s projects support important reforestation and mangrove rehabilitation which will help to ensure the longevity of these fragile ecosystems.
5. The Land Below the Wind
Our Expeditions will take place in Sabah, also known as The Land Below the Wind, because hurricanes and volcanoes are said to never disrupt the peace and tranquillity of the region.
This stunning location is nestled on the Northern tip of Borneo and is home to some of the most breathtaking mountains, rainforests and wildlife the island has to offer. Our Venturers will take part in impactful community and environmental projects in this region against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty and cultural heritage.
