Why You Should Consider A Raleigh Mini-Gap This Summer
11th February 2026 | Lauren Moses | 7 min read
Summer can feel like a weird limbo. You’ve wrapped up school, college or uni, but the next chapter hasn’t quite kicked off yet. Too short for a full gap year but too long to waste it all scrolling. A Mini-Gap is a 4 or 5-week Expedition that gives you a real taste of a full Raleigh gap year, just in a shorter timeframe. You’ll gain a flavour of a gap year Raleigh programme but shorter and a Mini-Gap Expedition with Raleigh turns your summer holiday into something bold and meaningful.

A More Budget-Friendly Way To Go Big

Trying Something New Without Going All In
1. Perfect if your calendar is already chaos
If your summer is already filling up fast, a 4-week Expedition is a strong option. It’s Raleigh’s shortest project-only experience and goes straight to the heart of what Raleigh does. You’ll spend around 19 days fully immersed in one project, either community or environmental, living and working closely with your team.
It’s ideal if you want to do something adventurous and worthwhile but don’t have time for extra phases.
2. A bit more challenge, still no long commitment
If you like the idea of mixing things up, the 5-week Expedition adds a shorter adventure challenge phase on top of your project. After your project work, you’ll take on 5 to 9 days of physical and mental challenge designed to push you, test your resilience and bring your whole team even closer together.
It’s a great option if you want that sense of achievement without signing up for a longer Expedition. And if you get there and realise you’re not ready to come home yet, there’s flexibility to extend to 7 weeks.
3. A more budget-friendly way to go big
Let’s talk money, because it matters. Everyone’s budget looks different, and choosing the right Expedition is about finding what works for you. A Mini-Gap can be a great option if you’re looking to be a bit more budget-conscious, while still getting the core Raleigh experience.
You’re not skimming the surface or missing out on the good stuff. You’re right in the middle of it, just for a shorter amount of time.
4. Trying something new without going all in
A Mini-Gap is also a great first step if you’re curious about a longer Expedition but not quite ready to commit. For some people, it’s the whole experience they were looking for, but for others, it’s the confidence boost on a Mini-Gap that makes doing something bigger feel possible later on.
In Costa Rica, Venturers support community-led projects including helping to build school buildings and taking part in awareness activities around waste management and climate action. In South Africa, you’ll spend time in and around community villages, working together on projects like creating sustainable food gardens, playgrounds and essential infrastructure identified by the community.
Not a compromise, just a smart choice
You don’t need a full year out to grow, challenge yourself or do something meaningful. A Mini-Gap Expedition is about making a decision that fits your life right now. You’ll come home with new skills, more confidence and a summer you didn’t waste.
If you want to use your summer for something better than killing time, a Mini-Gap could be exactly the right place to start.
