Tangible skills to show (not tell)
GET PRACTICAL
There’s a difference between knowing how something works and actually being able to do it. On a Raleigh Expedition, you get your hands dirty – literally. Whether you’re laying foundations, planting trees or navigating unmarked terrain, you’ll come home with practical skills that last your whole life.
If you want to be someone who can:
- Turn up somewhere unfamiliar and make themselves genuinely useful
- Pick up a practical skill quickly and apply it under real conditions
- Stay calm, make sound decisions and keep others safe
- Build a CV that shows real, tangible contribution
YOU BELONG AT RALEIGH
PRACTICAL & PURPOSEFUL
First Aid & Safety
During induction, you’ll be taught the safety skills essential for each phase of the Expedition. This will include: emergency procedures, equipment handling and incident response.
Construction & building
Work on real, long-standing projects, learning from local tradespeople and sticking to safety procedures. You could be laying bricks, building structures or digging foundations.
Habitat Restoration
You’ll learn to work the land purposefully – planting, clearing and restoring – while contributing to real conservation data that partners and researchers rely on. Your work could include propagation, invasive species removal and biological monitoring.
Planning & Project Management
As a Day Leader on Trek and through participation in project strategy sessions, you’ll practise the kind of structured thinking that translates directly into professional environments: setting objectives, delegating tasks, adapting when things change, and reviewing progress honestly.
Navigation & Expedition Craft
The Adventure phase demands practical self-sufficiency. You’ll learn to read terrain, manage your kit, ration supplies and keep a team moving safely across challenging ground
Health & Fitness
Expedition life is physically demanding from day one, and weeks on project and trek help you build serious strength and stamina that will stay with you on your return home.
*Please note, skills training will vary dependent on the demands of the project, and the discretion of the project partners. Raleigh International cannot guarantee which specific skills you’ll be trained in.
