Costa Rica is one of the 20 most biodiverse countries in the world. It is home to 26 National Parks and is known for its beaches, volcanoes and biodiversity.

More than 500,000 species are found here, representing 4% of the total species estimated worldwide, despite the country being only 0.03% of the world’s landmass. Approximately a quarter of Costa Rica is made up of protected jungle. Raleigh works to preserve this biodiversity, increase the resilience of local communities to climate change and improves access to education.

Environment Project – Improving Access to Conservation Areas

You will work in a national park to improve the trails and ranger stations and increase environmental awareness with local communities via environmental education initiatives, helping them to better manage their natural resources for future generations.

Community Project – Improving Access to Education

Volunteers playing with children in Costa Rica

Indigenous populations in Costa Rica are often the most marginalised members of society and tend to be some of the poorest. Education levels in these communities are much lower than the national average and poor school infrastructure further exacerbates the situation. You will work with the local community to improve educational infrastructure by building or improving school facilities. Your effort will help the community secure funding from the government for teaching staff, as without the necessary infrastructure funding is not guaranteed. We will also ensure the community have the know-how to manage and maintain the schools in the years to come.

Adventure Project – Trek

Volunteers walking on trek in Costa Rica

We have a variety of trek routes in Costa Rica, including the Dragon Trek and Baricifico trek where you can walk 280km from one side of Costa Rica to the other! You and your team will navigate the trek with the support of our Volunteer Managers. Trek requires courage to venture outside your comfort zone, and there are highs and lows. Supporting one another through these moments, the friendships formed on trek are often some of the strongest on Expedition because of all that you have shared and learnt together.
