Our story

Raleigh International: a community committed to impact.

We’re an ever-evolving organisation, constantly adapting to new ideas and challenges. But what never changes is our dedication to delivering results that last: communities who are empowered to develop sustainably, and young people who are inspired to take action.

Our history

1978: Operation Drake begins

A venture launched by HRH Prince Charles and Colonel John Blashford-Snell, Operation Drake had scientific exploration and community service as its aims. It also gave a generation of young people the inspiration to change the world.

1984: Operation Raleigh is born

Young people volunteered on projects across the globe, building life-long skills and confidence. Nearly 4,000 volunteers took part, creating the foundations of the global community we are today. With over 30 years of experience, we’re experts in supporting young people from a wide range of backgrounds.

1992: Operation Raleigh becomes Raleigh International

We kept our adventurous spirit and commitment to youth leadership, whilst broadening our programmatic aims to become the diverse and impact-driven charity we are today.

Our values

Our values are at the heart of our work. They guide how we do what we do. They are shared by our supporters, volunteers, project partners and the communities with whom we work.

Open to discovery

We are open-minded to trying new things and learn from one another.

We have the grit, determination and resilience to get the job done.

Create impact together

We seek to maximise long-lasting impact in everything we do.

Act with integrity

We act with honesty and respect, and we take responsibility for doing what we say.
