Why volunteer in Borneo?
If you want a gap year or travel experience that’s real, raw and meaningful – Borneo is the one.
Home to ancient rainforests, orangutans, and 6% of the planet’s biodiversity, Borneo is extraordinary. But it’s also facing serious challenges: deforestation, disappearing mangroves, and underdeveloped rural communities.
On a Raleigh Expedition in Borneo, Venturers volunteer to protect fragile habitats and support local Dusun communities through sustainable projects improving access to clean water, sanitation and community spaces. The Adventure Challenge in Borneo is unique among Raleigh destinations — combining a multi-day leadership trek through the Crocker Range Salt Trail, eco-tourism work with the Sungai community, a river safari on the Kinabatangan River, and a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.

Expedition life in Borneo
Every Raleigh Expedition in Borneo blends volunteering, adventure, and personal growth. You’ll rotate through three unforgettable phases: Community, Environmental and the Adventure Challenge.
You’ll be at Fieldbase for your induction, ‘changeover’ between phases and to at the end.
Borneo example itinerary
It depends on the time and budget you have – if you’re taking a gap year in Borneo or just a bit of time out before carrying on studying or working. The full 10-week Expedition with Raleigh in Borneo will look like this. You’ll get more detail on the projects nearer the time.
Induction and training (3-4 days)
For this you’ll be at our Fieldbase – Camp Bongkud. During this time you’ll get to know your fellow Venturers and prepare for Expedition life. You’ll receive essential training on topics such as health and safety and cultural awareness.
Community Project (19 days)
Venturers work together in a Sabah native community on projects which may include supporting construction of community halls, toilet blocks, or village drainage systems.
Debrief at Fieldbase (2-3 days)
At the end of each phase, everyone returns to Fieldbase ‘Camp Bongkud‘ for a few days before moving on to your next project. You’ll catch up with the rest of the Expedition team and start to prepare for your next project. Project groups will change between each phase, this is an important part of the Expedition experience.
Leadership trek (11 days)
You’ll conquer a 7-day trek across the Salt Crocker Range. On this trek, every day is different, including the weather and the accommodation.
Jungle challenge (8 days)
You’ll work on eco-tourism projects, living in a rainforest community with Orang Sunai (indigenous river people), go on river safaris and visit Borneo’s famous Orangutans at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.
Environmental Project (19 – 21 days)
You’ll work on reforestation activities and mangrove rehabilitation, which will support local wildlife, while also raising awareness locally about these issues.
Final review at Fieldbase (2 days)
All Expeditions end with everyone coming together for a final few days back at Fieldbase. Catch up with friends and celebrate all you have achieved together.

Borneo Expedition FAQs
Frequently asked questions about Raleigh Expeditions in Borneo
Where in Borneo does Raleigh International operate?
Raleigh International operates in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Expeditions combine community projects in rural villages, environmental conservation in and around the rainforest, and an adventure challenge through remote landscapes. Fieldbase is located near Kota Kinabalu, with project sites varying each Expedition.
What projects will I work on?
There are two kinds of projects on a Raleigh Expedition: Community and Environmental.
The Community phase places Venturers on grassroots development projects — improving schools, supporting local organisations, and working alongside rural communities. The Environmental phase focuses on conservation work in the Greater Kruger area, helping to protect wildlife and support biodiversity through practical conservation activities.
Venturers on the 10 week Expedition will take part in both types of projects, whereas 7, 5 and 4 weekers will complete either one Community or one Environmental Project.
What wildlife might I see in Borneo?
Borneo is one of the world’s most biodiverse places. Depending on your project locations, you may see orangutans, macaques, hornbills, proboscis monkeys, tropical birds and many other native species. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but every Expedition takes place in environments rich in biodiversity.
What accommodation will I stay in?
Varies by phase: longhouses at Fieldbase; community halls or sulap huts (open-air stilted shelters) on project; hammocks on adventure phase. All basic and authentic to rural Sabah.
What is the weather like in Borneo?
Do I need a visa for Borneo?
What language is spoken in Borneo?
- Selamat pagi – Good morning (literally translating as ‘Good day’)
- Salamat petang – Good afternoon
- Selamat malam – Good evening or good night
- Terima kasih – Thank you
How long are Expeditions?
Raleigh offers 10-, 7-, 5- and 4- Week Expeditions. Depending on the length of your Expedition you will take part in 1, 2 or all 3 of the phases: Community Project, Environmental Project and Adventure Trek.
