Maria's Story: ‘The Volunteers are a Big Help. We Learn from Them and They Learn from Us'/La Historia de María:'Los Voluntarios son una Gran Ayuda.

Maria Magdalone Gonzalez Ruiz is an inspiring 90-something-year-old woman who has lived in the community of San Jose de Paiwas, in the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua, her entire life. She has raised eleven children, run a farm and now grows and harvests Nicaragua’s staple ingredient – frijoles beans – to earn a living.

She lives with her husband, Enemesuo and son, Fulgencio in a cosy yet, basic wooden house located on top of a steep hill a few minutes’ walk from the centre of the community. Despite the idyllic and secluded appearance of their home, the isolation of living atop a steep track has led to Maria and her husband being homebound.

She says life in her community ‘is sometimes hard, sometimes not, we don’t have enough food to eat. We have very little and we face that everyday’.

Due to not being able to leave the house, Maria and Enemesuo rely heavily on Fulgencio to help them with their day-to-day tasks including, retrieving water from the nearest water source (around a 5-minute walk) for them to eat, drink and wash with.

‘My son has to go to the water source down the road to get water. It is difficult because we need water for washing dishes, our hands and ourselves. My son collects water for my husband and myself as we can’t leave the house’.

The temperamental weather of San Jose de Paiwas means that the track leading to their house often becomes muddy, slippery and unsafe, making it even harder for Fulgencio to carry the water from the water source to their home.

To tackle this problem and to make life easier for Maria and her family, our volunteers have been building a water tap next to their home to make accessing water easier.

Maria said that the tap will ‘benefit her son hugely as he’s the one who walks to collect the water’.

This is not the first time Raleigh have worked in San Jose de Paiwas either. In a previous cycle, volunteers worked alongside community members to build facilities for Maria, Enemesuo and Fulgencio.

‘The previous volunteers helped to build an eco-latrine, a water tank, a sink to wash dishes and steps outside to help us walk around the house – it was very helpful for our daily life’.

The compost-latrine is especially useful as they will be able to use the compost on their land.

Maria expressed her gratitude to the volunteers – ‘the volunteers are a big help. We learn from them and they learn from us. They come here to help us from far away and we are very happy to have them here – we feel very supported’.

As we thanked and waved goodbye to Maria and her wonderful family, she smiled and said we were always welcome in her home, ‘anytime you want to come over, you are welcome. We will give you fresh coconuts. You are here to help us and we are very appreciative’.

Maria is testament to all women worldwide and her generosity and gratitude are the epitome of Nicaraguan hospitality.

Raleigh is currently working in two different communities assisting with improving the household’s water, sanitation and hygiene facilities. On top of building Maria and her family a tap, the volunteers have also constructed a water filtration system for the community’s current water system and have held multiple action and awareness days in the local school surrounding hand washing and nutrition.
