5 Reasons to Volunteer in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is world-renowned for its captivating landscapes, rich biodiversity and vibrant culture, which also makes it an exciting destination for young travellers who are seeking a meaningful experience!

Choosing the right destination can be challenging, especially when considering the impact of your volunteer work and the potential safety of the country you are visiting.

But don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Here are 5 reasons why Costa Rica should be at the top of your travel list.

Is it Safe to Volunteer in Costa Rica?

Raleigh Expeditions to Costa Rica are an excellent choice for Venturers seeking a secure environment. As a country, Costa Rica has invested in infrastructure and security measures to guarantee the safety of its visitors and prioritise tourism, making it one of the safer destinations for travel in Central America.

In addition, we have an established and thorough safety procedure and extensive risk management plans, to ensure our Venturers are safe. On Expedition, Venturers learn about potential hazards and emergency protocols during our extensive safety training sessions before setting out on their adventure. This way, you can feel at ease as you explore the land of Pura Vida!

5 Reasons to Volunteer in Costa Rica

1. Enjoy Tropical Climates and Breathtaking Landscapes

Costa Rica is home to immense biodiversity, exotic wildlife, beaches, volcanoes and rainforest – what else could you need?

On a 10-week Expedition, you will have the opportunity to enjoy working on important environmental work in national parks and their surrounding areas, as well as an immense 260 km trek through various landscapes with wild camping and summiting mountains.

The summer (or dry season) in Costa Rica lasts from December to April and tends to be the best time to enjoy sunny weather and bright sunshine. Winter lasts from May until November and typically brings sunny days with midday showers of rain. With sunlight and warmth throughout the entire year, this country is an ideal setting for outdoor activities and volunteer work.

2. Work on Important Projects

Costa Rica’s diverse ecosystems are sites of global interest. However, the country’s national parks often suffer from limited budgets, shortage of staff, illegal deforestation and pollution. Venturers take part in significant conservation work and assist local communities to combat these issues.

Similarly, our community projects focus on infrastructure maintenance and construction that aim to increase access to education, raise awareness through campaigns and workshops, and improve access to water and sanitation.

3. Experience Unique Cultural Immersion

One key reason to volunteer in Costa Rica is the chance to live alongside local communities and develop an understanding of their traditions, values, and way of life. As you work with people from rural and remote areas, you will uncover a special side of Costa Rica that few tourists get to experience. These unique perspectives provide Venturers with a range of cultural immersion opportunities, which will leave you with deeper cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.

4. Seize Adventure

A Raleigh Expedition in Costa Rica is the epitome of adventure. If you are looking for an Expedition location that promises diversity, fun, incredible wildlife sightings and reconnecting with nature, this is the country for you!

The immersive nature of our Expeditions means you will be able to enjoy going back to basics in a stunning and culturally rich country, without the pull and distraction of modern technology. Expeditions are challenging and require Venturers to sometimes step outside their comfort zone, but that’s the heart of adventure!

As author and political activist Hellen Keller described it: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing”!

5. Personal Growth

Raleigh Expeditions offer an important space for self-discovery and personal development. During your time in Costa Rica, your resilience, adaptability and confidence will grow as you work with people from a range of backgrounds and learn to face adversity head-on.

An Expedition in Costa Rica is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to delve into self-discovery and learn what matters most to you and what you want to do in the future.
