Getting Outside the Classroom: Real-World Learning with Raleigh

What is Real World Learning?

Do you ever look out the classroom window and daydream about travelling the world, meeting people from different nationalities or putting your hard work to good use in underserved communities? Our Expeditions might be the solution you’ve been looking for! We’ll show you all the benefits of learning outside the classroom.

Raleigh can provide you with real-world learning experiences that are not only vastly different from a traditional classroom environment but will equip you with hands-on experience that prepares you for real-life challenges. Through various phases of your Expedition, you will improve your critical thinking, problem-solving and confidence as a leader, which ultimately will prove invaluable in your career and further studies.

Why is Learning Outside the Classroom Important?

Learning outside of a traditional classroom setting can inspire, uplift and challenge you. On Expedition, you can apply your knowledge to practical, real-world situations and create a deeper understanding about critical topics surrounding climate change and sustainability and take this knowledge to create real impact!

You will take on leadership roles to grow your independence and confidence, as well as collaborate with team members from a range of different backgrounds to sharpen your communication skills.

You will be exposed to a range of different environments and cultures which will broaden your perspective, showing you all the benefits of learning outside the classroom. On top of this, learning in a natural setting could inspire you to pursue sustainability as your mental wellbeing and appreciation for the natural world grows in our stunning Expedition locations.

3 Real Benefits of Learning Outside the Classroom with Raleigh

Raleigh Expeditions offer a unique opportunity for 17 to 24-year-olds to develop these critical skills and in turn, improve and dictate their future. Here’s how!

1. Real Impact

In a classroom setting, we often miss out on seeing the real-world impact of our hard work and studying. On Expedition, you will see the immediate results of your efforts.

You could be taking part in both Environmental and Community projects, building and improving school or farming infrastructure in Costa Rica or South Africa. During these projects, you will work alongside people from diverse backgrounds. You will become a confident communicator, team player, and leader and, by the end of Expedition, will have a greater understanding of global issues.

2. Real Cultures

The benefits of learning outside the classroom are distinctively different to the experiences of an onsite educational class.

While you may develop an intellectual understanding of various traditions and practices in a classroom setting, you will not develop the same deep appreciation as on a Raleigh Expedition.

With Raleigh, you will be working and living alongside Indigenous and local communities, learning about their way of life and helping them combat local issues. During your time on Expedition, you could forge friendships with people from various backgrounds and develop a well-rounded understanding of their perspectives and unique issues, giving you a broad cultural understanding which will undoubtedly serve you later in your career and personal life.

3. Real Development

Rather than grades, you will be able to feel and see the results of work in your own personal development. The real-world learning that a Raleigh Expedition offers, means you will be able to witness firsthand the positive impact of your work, which will in turn give you a sense of accomplishment and purpose that can be difficult to find in a classroom.

You will step outside of your comfort zone and achieve feats you never thought you were capable of. Whether it’s completing a 250 km trek through the mountains, leading your team to the successful completion of a project, or realising you are more resilient than you first gave yourself credit for.

These skills and experiences won’t just enhance your personal development, but they will also prepare you for your career or further education.
