Supporting Reforestation in Madriz’ Eco-Tourism Hotspot/Apoyo a la Reforestación en el Punto de Acceso Ecoturístico de Madriz

Here, families have a deep appreciation of the natural beauty of their region, and the symbiotic relationship between the land and the livelihoods they derive from it. Even if the family business is not directly related to agriculture, here many households are overflowing with their own fruit and vegetables. This behaviour and environmental awareness is reflected at a municipal level, as was evident at last Saturday’s celebration of Ecotourism in El Pegador.

Aquí, las familias tienen una apreciación de la belleza natural local muy profunda y son conscientes de la relación simbiótica que hay entre el terreno y los sustentos. Aun si los negocios familiares no se basen directamente en la agricultura, muchos hogares se rebosan de las frutas y verduras que se cultivan. Esta actitud se traduce al nivel municipal como era evidente durante el día del ecoturismo en El Pegador el sábado pasado.

For the day, tourists transformed this usually quiet village, while groups of locals worked to make the local lagoon La Bruja home to a bustling fair. Entrepreneurs sold their produce, young people competed in a swimming competition, and community leaders gave speeches promoting the importance of caring for the environment and treasuring the local natural beauty and resources.

Normalmente los camiones pasan tranquilamente por este pueblecito cada día. Pero hoy se lo transformó por la llegada de buses llenos de turistas, mientras de que grupos de locales trabajaran para convertir la laguna en una base turística con una feria en la cual los emprendedores del pueblo podían vender sus productos. Los jóvenes tomaron parte en un concurso de natación, y los lideres locales dieron discursos en los cuales se subrayaron la importancia de cuidar del medioambiente y acerca de la apreciación de la belleza natural de la región.

Our team used the day as the perfect opportunity to launch our new campaign ‘Adopt a Tree’. Having spent the last couple of weeks sourcing ash, black earth, manure and plant seeds within the community, we wanted to plant 270 papaya, mango, lemon, orange, mandarin and passion fruit seeds.

El día fue la oportunidad ideal para lanzar nuestra campaña ‘Adopta un Árbol’.  Ya habíamos recogido bastante ceniza, tierra negra y semillas dentro de la comunidad durante las últimas semanas para sembrar 270 plantas de papaya, mango, limón, naranja, cálala y aguacate.

The morning was spent not only recruiting a small team of entrepreneurs to care for the seedlings after the team leave the community, but also finding local people to ‘adopt’ these trees once they are large enough to move. Our aim was to promote environmental sustainability through reforestation and the use of local resources, as well as promoting entrepreneurial thinking and economic growth through the potential income these fruit trees could provide in the future.

Pasamos la mañana no solo reclutando un equipo pequeño de emprendedores para cuidar de las semillas cuando Raleigh salga de El Pegador, sino reclutamos miembros de las comunidades que querrían ‘adoptar’ un árbol cuando las semillas crezcan. Era nuestra meta fomentar la sostenibilidad medioambiental a través de la reforestación, además de aprovechar de los recursos locales y promover la sostenibilidad económica a través del ingreso posible que estos árboles de fruta puedan proveer en el futuro.

We have built a small greenhouse in which the seeded bags will live for the next few months. With the help of our team of gardeners we will irrigate and cultivate the plants until they are ready to be distributed to the adopters.

Construimos un pequeño vivero en que las bolsas sembradas van a quedarse durante las siguientes meses. Con la ayuda de nuestro equipo de cuidadores vamos a regar y cultivar las plantas hasta el punto que estén listas para distribución a los adoptadores.

The enthusiasm with which our efforts were met by the community has given us more inspiration to continue. We hope that with this small project we can work to protect the environment and help to contribute to the growth of this beautiful community.

El entusiasmo que encontramos por parte de la comunidad nos dio inspiración y fortaleció nuestro deseo seguir. Esperamos que este proyecto pequeño pueda contribuir al crecimiento de esta comunidad hermosa.
