James’ story: Sweat, mosquito bites, tourism and invaluable personal experience/La historia de James: sudor, picaduras de mosquitos, turismo e inestimable experiencia personal

James with the National Park rangers and other Raleigh volunteers

I found learning and understanding the lives of the park rangers particularly interesting. In Piedras Blancas, far adrift from civilisation, work 3 park rangers, Alberto, Ronald, and Carlos. They live in their communal house for 10-15 day shifts, away from loved ones, friends, comfort, and civilisation. The only way in and out was a precarious trek through a fast flowing river or a 5 hour hike through the rainforest. I found their ingenuity in finding pleasure in the small things (whether it was drinking from a coconut, making ‘agua dulce’, or playing a game of football with us) particularly inspiring, given how many in our society grow easily bored despite the plethora of stimuli and activities available.

Before joining Raleigh, I believe many had the impression that they would be able to work within communities, wherein they would see clear and tangible change from their work. Thus days spent clearing trails, building rest shelters, digging trenches to drain water and other agricultural work left some questioning the utility of our work. However, it was quickly brought to our attention that what we were doing greatly aids the tourism industry of Costa Rica’s national parks. Tourism is one of Costa Rica’s largest industries, bringing around US$3.4 billion to the country’s economy in 2016, roughly 5.8% of its gross domestic product. Our work helps the rangers get paths ready and safe for visitors to use, allowing them to access larger and diverse parts of the national parks that were previously unseen by the general public. The money brought in from tourism can thus be spent towards the nation’s infrastructure, education, health and other social services.

What attracted me to Raleigh was the emphasis placed on youth leadership development and personal growth. Watching the project managers work, combined with the experience of being a day leader, where you are in charge of the running of the day, has given me a greater understanding of how a good manager should and shouldn’t work, and has helped me continue to develop my own personal management style. Additionally, the experience has toughened me up, enhancing my flexibility and drive in the face of adversity or discomfort and has given me confidence in myself that I can achieve many things I thought impossible should I set my mind to it.

From combating the heat and humidity and the seemingly endless number of mosquito bites, I have not just survived these 3 weeks but I have, to my surprise, thrived. While one may think it cliche to say that above all things I have grown as a person, I would say that my time with Raleigh will help shape who I am going forward and has provided me with abilities and experiences I never thought I would need or want but nonetheless are invaluable for my future.
