Newcastle University students help ensure inclusive and quality education for all/ Los estudiantes de la Universidad de Newcastle ayudan a garantizar una educación inclusiva y de calidad para todos

One of the main reasons behind signing up to volunteer for Raleigh International included the opportunity for us to apply our technical knowledge from university in a challenging environment, different to anything we had previously experienced. In addition to our academic knowledge, we also wanted the chance to test our comfort zones, encouraging personal development in key areas such as interpersonal, leadership and management skills.

Una de las principales razones para inscribirse como voluntario de Raleigh International fue la oportunidad de aplicar nuestros conocimientos técnicos de la universidad en un entorno desafiante, diferente a cualquier experiencia anterior. Además de nuestro conocimiento académico, también queríamos tener la oportunidad de probar nuestras zonas de confort, fomentando el desarrollo personal en áreas clave tales como las habilidades interpersonales, de liderazgo y de gestión.

The three-week project involved living in a tight-knit group of 18 people; working, eating and sleeping together in close proximity. For most of us, this proved to be a much greater challenge than initially expected, and in some ways tougher than the construction process itself. Integrating with the local indigenous community was very rewarding and enjoyable. For example, we helped lead English lessons, highlighting the additional opportunities that could be gained by learning a third language. We also visited the homes of some of the community members, including Manuel and Alejo from the Parents Association, which gave us an insight into the culture and lifestyle of the community. A weekly football game on Sundays also provided us with an opportunity to relax and integrate in a more informal setting, as well as showcase some of England’s finest football talent. This resulted in an intense and memorable rivalry with the local team!

El proyecto de tres semanas involucró vivir en un grupo muy unido de 18 personas; trabajando, comiendo y durmiendo juntos en las proximidades. Para la mayoría de nosotros, esto resultó ser un desafío mucho mayor de lo que inicialmente se esperaba, y de alguna manera más difícil que el proceso de construcción en sí mismo. La integración con la comunidad indígena local fue muy gratificante y agradable. Por ejemplo, ayudamos a dirigir las clases de inglés, destacando las oportunidades adicionales que se pueden obtener aprendiendo un tercer idioma. También visitamos los hogares de algunos miembros de la comunidad, incluidos Manuel y Alejo de la Asociación de Padres, que nos dieron una idea de la cultura y el estilo de vida de la comunidad. Un partido de fútbol semanal los domingos también nos brindó la oportunidad de relajarse e integrarse en un entorno más informal, así como de exhibir algunos de los mejores talentos futbolísticos de Inglaterra. ¡Esto resultó en una rivalidad intensa e inolvidable con el equipo local!

In summary, this project has opened our eyes to the hurdles some communities in Costa Rica face with regards to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 4: ’Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning’. We have learnt to appreciate the opportunities available to us and have seen first-hand how projects like this are so important in initiating long-term sustainable development.

En resumen, este proyecto nos ha abierto los ojos a los obstáculos que enfrentan algunas comunidades en Costa Rica para alcanzar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, específicamente el Objetivo 4: “Garantizar una educación inclusiva y de calidad para todos y promover el aprendizaje permanente”. Hemos aprendido a apreciar las oportunidades disponibles para nosotros y hemos visto de primera mano cómo proyectos como este son tan importantes para iniciar el desarrollo sostenible a largo plazo.
