Project Planning Visits: Reflections and Revelations/Visitas de Planificación del Proyecto: Reflexiones y Revelaciones

Sabah talking to a community member on her Project Planning Visit.

Sabah Salman – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene/Sabah Salman – Agua, Sanemiento e Hygiene

Sabah is a GP from London. Over the next three weeks she is going to be living and working in a community called, Valle de Casas in the North of Nicaragua.

‘During our visit to our project site I was really taken aback by the hospitality of the local community – they were so warm and welcoming. Now that we’ve left, I miss them. It’s amazing how you can make bonds in such a short amount of time’.

‘In our community there are 190 people and 38 families. When we first arrived, we went to all the houses to introduce ourselves and to explain what we’re going to be doing with the volunteers over the next few weeks’.

‘Our host family showed us the stream where they used to collect water. Three years ago, our project partners, Agua Para La Vida put in taps so that the community had access to water closer to their homes. Everyone now seems to have a water source a couple of meters from their house, which has clearly changed the way they live’.

‘When the volunteers arrive, we will be working mostly on educational projects. We’ll be going to the local schools to discuss water and sanitation with the children as well as, doing some construction work’.

‘I’m really excited to see the enthusiasm of the volunteers and the community and I can’t wait to see everyone working together to achieve something, which will hopefully make a long sustainable change for the community in the future’.

Carol is from the UK and has just finished her master’s degree in Outdoor Environmental and Sustainability Education in Edinburgh. Over the next three weeks she is going to be living and working in the indigenous area of Matambu in Northwest Costa Rica.

‘This project is the first time Raleigh have worked in Matambu. Mel and I found it quite nerve-wracking meeting the family as we don’t speak a lot of Spanish and we wanted to make a good impression, but the family were so welcoming and friendly’.

‘Don Ezequiel, the man who’s running the project, is the father of the household we were staying in. We could tell the whole family were really excited about the project, which inspired us even more to want to make the project a success’.

‘Our tasks are going to involve a lot of physical work. We have three jobs – one is to improve and maintain one path that already exists. Another is to build a new trail and our final task is to build a wooden cabin. It is going to be hot, hard labour but we are planning to start work early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. We will then make the most of our time in the afternoon by doing other activities with the community and schools such as, sessions on active citizenship and raising awareness on environmental issues’.

‘I’m excited to start building our team with the volunteers. I’m also keen to explore the area and learn more about the indigenous culture. We’ve started to plan some cultural activities with Don Ezequiel such as, music nights and pottery demonstrations, which I think will be very interesting’.

‘Nuestras tareas van a implicar mucho trabajo físico.

Adam Patrick – Youth Leadership (trek)/Adam Patrick – Liderazgo Juvenile (caminata)

Adam is a Doctor from England. Over the coming 3 weeks he is going to be completing the Guanacaste trail in Costa Rica trekking 260km over 20 days. He has just returned from doing a 5-day practice trek in Nicaragua.

‘I found the practice trek really useful, I loved it. Lots of people had said that when you go on trek you come back a really tight-knit group and that was definitely the case, it was really fun and we learnt a lot’.

‘During the trek we came to understand the importance of pre-planning our evenings for example, making sure we had a clear plan for setting up camp and knowing where we were going to get water from. We also learnt about what equipment we used a lot and how was best to distribute and carry it.’

‘The trek itself was amazing. There were points where we were so high up we could see volcanoes for miles. There was a section where we were walking and there were birds flying below us. I’m so excited to get to the beach at the end of the trek and to have a really solid group – I can’t wait for us to be a real unit. It’ll be great for the volunteers and really rewarding for the managers as well’.

After an intense few days of training, our volunteers and Project Managers have now left the training centre for their first three weeks on project. It’s going to be an exciting few days as our Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and Natural Resource Management groups settle into their communities and our trek groups get into the swing of life on the road!
