We’re excited to announce the launch of this new 10-day UK Expedition – a pioneering first for Raleigh International; working with even younger adventurers than before (14 and 15 years old). It marks the next step in expanding our mission to inspire and nurture the next generation of global change-makers.
They’ll be setting sail on board the Prolific for 6 days, followed by volunteering a coastal based environmental project. An unforgettable adventure designed to build confidence and leadership skills as well as learning about and contributing to sustainable development goals.
Raleigh International’s roots in sailing
Raleigh International’s history begins with sailing origins. In 1978, Operation Drake set sail on a remarkable round-the-world voyage, igniting the spirit of adventure in young people from diverse corners of the globe as they embarked on a transformative journey aboard the brigantine Eye of the Wind. This Expedition was the inception of a legacy that would span generations.
In 1984, Operation Drake evolved into Operation Raleigh, an innovative programme that empowered young individuals to volunteer on projects worldwide, shaping the future leaders of tomorrow and promoting a global perspective on sustainable change.
By 1992, Operation Raleigh had blossomed into Raleigh International, a platform for thousands of young adults through which they could create lasting, meaningful impacts in alignment with the United Nations’ Global Goals for Sustainable Development. The legacy continued, and the flame of change remained ablaze.
Going back to our sailing heritage in 2024
Fast forward to 2024 and we’re now poised to embark on a remarkable journey that brings us full circle. We’re thrilled to announce the launch of this latest opportunity to volunteer on our UK Expedition, one that captures the essence of our roots and rekindles the adventurous spirit that has fuelled us for decades – a sailing voyage!
But there’s a twist! This new UK Expedition is not just a return to our origins; it is also a pioneering first. We’ll be working with 14- 15 year-olds; much younger adventurers than have ever joined us before!
As we set sail once more, we’re not only retracing the paths of the past, but we’re also blazing new trails, sharing the thrill of exploration with the next generation and ready to champion the ideals of sustainability, youth empowerment, and the undying spirit of adventure.
This new Expedition is a testament to the enduring legacy of Raleigh International. We can’t wait to see what this voyage holds, as we continue to sail toward a better, more sustainable future where young people lead the way!
