Hayden is 20 years old and is from a small village called Baston in Lincolnshire. Hayden currently works as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor whilst studying a 5-year part-time degree in Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management. He works four days a week at his project site in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and the other day attending Nottingham Trent University.
“I’d always wanted to do a volunteer project, but the ones I had seen whilst at school never fully engaged my interest. I first heard of Raleigh 3 months into my job with VolkerFitzpatrick and immediately decided that it was what I wanted to do.”
Hayden tiene 20 años y es de un pequeño pueblo llamado Baston en Lincolnshire. Actualmente, Hayden trabaja como inspectora de materiales,mientras estudia un título de 5 años a tiempo parcial en Gestión de la topografía y construcción. Trabaja cuatro días a la semana en el sitio de su proyecto en Ely, Cambridgeshire, y el otro día asistió a Nottingham Trent University.
“Siempre quise hacer un proyecto de voluntariado, pero los que había visto mientras estaba en la escuela nunca me interesaron por completo. Escuché por primera vez acerca de Raleigh 3 meses después de mi trabajo en VolkerFitzpatrick e inmediatamente decidí que era lo que quería hacer.”
Max is 24 and from Nottinghamshire. Last year, he graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management..
“I first heard of Raleigh when I was at university and when the opportunity came about through VolkerFitzpatrick, I immediately decided to apply for the expedition. Raleigh works directly with communities and focuses on youth, which is a perfect fit for me.
Max tiene 24 años y es de Nottinghamshire. El año pasado, se graduó de la Universidad de Nottingham Trent con un título en Gestión Comercial dela construcción y topografía .
“La primera vez que oí hablar de Raleigh cuando estaba en la universidad y cuando surgió la oportunidad a través de VolkerFitzpatrick, de inmediato decidí postularme para la expedición. Raleigh trabaja directamente con las comunidades y se enfoca en los jóvenes, lo cual es perfecto para mí”.
Alvaro grew up on the island of Gran Canaria and went to a British school at a young age before going to Cardiff University to study Civil Engineering. He graduated with a Masters in Civil Engineering in the summer of 2017 and is now working as a site engineer for VolkerFitzpatrick.
“I have travelled extensively throughout Europe with my family and I have had the chance to meet other cultures and learn about the history of the different countries. However, I still wanted to work as a volunteer on projects for communities in need, so I am very grateful to Raleigh and Volkerpatrick for this unique opportunity.”
Alvaro creció en la isla de Gran Canaria y fue a una escuela británica a una edad temprana antes de ir a la Universidad de Cardiff para estudiar Ingeniería Civil. Se graduó con una Maestría en Ingeniería Civil en el verano de 2017 y ahora está trabajando como ingeniero para VolkerFitzpatrick.
“He viajado extensamente por toda Europa con mi familia y he tenido la oportunidad de conocer otras culturas y conocer la historia de los diferentes países. Sin embargo, todavía quería trabajar como voluntario en proyectos para comunidades necesitadas, por lo que estoy muy agradecido con Raleigh y Volkerpatrick por esta oportunidad única.”
The VolkerFitzpatrick employees joined a group of volunteers in an indigenous community situated in the Alto Chirripo Territory. The community located in one of the most remote areas in the country and one of the key barriers to development in the community is lack of quality education.
Los empleados de VolkerFitzpatrick se unieron a un grupo de voluntarios en una comunidad indígena situada en el Territorio Alto Chirripó. La comunidad ubicada en una de las áreas más remotas del país y una de las principales barreras para el desarrollo en la comunidad es la falta de educación de calidad.
Our volunteers spent three weeks in Tsirbakla, working alongside community members to build a space for the kindergarten children to learn and helping run workshops with parents associations on managing and maintaining school infrastructure in the future.
Nuestros voluntarios pasaron tres semanas en Tsirbakla, trabajando junto a los miembros de la comunidad para construir un espacio para que los niños de kinder aprendan y ayuden a organizar talleres con las asociaciones de padres sobre cómo administrar y mantener la infraestructura escolar en el futuro.
“One of my biggest motivations to volunteer on this project was to get out of my comfort zone whilst helping build a school so more children to access education. I also felt like I needed to put myself in their shoes in order to appreciate everything we have back home. Raleigh’s strategy of investing in young people really attracted me because it is in their power to help make a difference in the future and sometimes in our society this is forgotten.” – Alvaro
“Una de mis mayores motivaciones para ser voluntario en este proyecto fue salir de mi zona de confort mientras ayudaba a construir una escuela para que más niños tuvieran acceso a la educación. También sentí que necesitaba ponerme en su lugar para apreciar todo lo que tenemos en casa. La estrategia de Raleigh de invertir en los jóvenes realmente me atrajo porque está en su poder ayudar a hacer una diferencia en el futuro y, en ocasiones, en nuestra sociedad esto se olvida.” – Alvaro
“The community project has been amazing and a great learning experience. It is clear that the work we are doing will hugely benefit the local community of Tsirbakla and I am really proud to be part of it. The project will provide more local children access to education and reduce the growing gap between indigenous communities and wider society.” – Max
“El proyecto de la comunidad ha sido increíble y una gran experiencia de aprendizaje. Está claro que el trabajo que estamos haciendo beneficiará enormemente a la comunidad local de Tsirbakla y estoy muy orgulloso de ser parte de él. El proyecto proporcionará a más niños locales acceso a la educación y reducirá la creciente brecha entre las comunidades indígenas y la sociedad en general.” – Max
“I think the project will allow a greater number of Tsirbakla community members, along with surrounding communities, to have access to an education. This is fundamental to the development of communities on a local scale in social, economic and environmental aspects. By helping to provide access to education, it helps to achieve the sustainable development goals and keeps communities in touch with the fast-changing, ever-growing outside world.” – Hayden
“Creo que el proyecto permitirá que un mayor número de miembros de la comunidad de Tsirbakla, junto con las comunidades de los alrededores, tengan acceso a una educación. Esto es fundamental para el desarrollo de las comunidades a escala local en los aspectos sociales, económicos y ambientales. Al ayudar a proporcionar acceso a la educación, ayuda a lograr los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible y mantiene a las comunidades en contacto con el mundo exterior en constante cambio y en constante crecimiento.” – Hayden
On Raleigh expeditions in Costa Rica, international volunteers work alongside home country volunteers, whose native language is Spanish. Volunteers are also working directly with members of the community, which means communication is essential when carrying out work during projects.
“At first it was definitely a big challenge, with the language barrier being the biggest hurdle. However, it took no time at all to build a relationship with the community members and international volunteers and to figure out how to work best with each other. It has been great to see everyone pulling in the same direction and working together. Even if there is a language barrier, it doesn’t matter if you are all working together to achieve the same goal.” – Max
En las expediciones de Raleigh en Costa Rica, los voluntarios internacionales trabajan junto a los voluntarios del país de origen, cuyo idioma materno es el español. Los voluntarios también están trabajando directamente con los miembros de la comunidad, lo que significa que la comunicación es esencial al realizar el trabajo durante los proyectos.
“Al principio definitivamente fue un gran desafío, con la barrera del idioma como el mayor obstáculo. Sin embargo, no tomó tiempo construir una relación con los miembros de la comunidad y los voluntarios internacionales y descubrir cómo trabajar mejor entre ellos. Ha sido genial ver a todos tirando en la misma dirección y trabajando juntos. Incluso si hay una barrera del idioma, no importa si todos trabajan juntos para lograr el mismo objetivo. “- Max
During their time on project, the VolkerFitzpatrick employees have had the opportunity to work in international teams to build skills, lead on projects and get out of their comfort zone.
“The skills I have learnt include becoming a stronger leader, being able to listen more and, sometimes, when to speak less. I have become clearer and more concise in my speaking and better at problem-solving by ensuring I take a step back, think and then act.” – Hayden
Durante su tiempo en el proyecto, los empleados de VolkerFitzpatrick han tenido la oportunidad de trabajar en equipos internacionales para desarrollar habilidades, liderar proyectos y salir de su zona de confort.
“Las habilidades que aprendí incluyen llegar a ser un líder más fuerte, poder escuchar más y, a veces, hablar menos. Me he vuelto más claro y más conciso en mi discurso y mejor en la resolución de problemas, asegurándome de dar un paso atrás, pensar y luego actuar.” – Hayden
Whilst volunteering in Tsirbakla, Alvaro has also been teaching English to the children in the community. “I asked the director of the school if I could organise English lessons for the children as I could speak Spanish to them too and he agreed to it. Indigenous children are extremely shy but, with patience, they end up talking and learning. I have found it extremely rewarding when they smile, have fun and learn at the same time.”
Mientras ser voluntario en Tsirbakla, Alvaro también ha estado enseñando inglés a los niños de la comunidad. “Le pregunté al director de la escuela si podía organizar clases de inglés para los niños, ya que también podía hablarles en español y aceptó. Los niños indígenas son extremadamente tímidos pero, con paciencia, terminan hablando y aprendiendo. Me pareció extremadamente gratificante cuando sonrían, se divierten y aprenden al mismo tiempo.”
On their return to the UK, Max, Hayden and Alvaro hope to apply the skills they gained through their experience with Raleigh to their day-to-day lives and in their roles with VolkerFitzpatrick.
A su regreso al Reino Unido, Max, Hayden y Alvaro esperan aplicar las habilidades que adquirieron a través de su experiencia con Raleigh en su vida cotidiana y en sus roles con VolkerFitzpatrick.
“I am keen to raise awareness for Raleigh International and the importance of their projects and contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. I also want to highlight how experiences such as mine contribute to the making of a young person into a stronger, more open-minded and well-rounded individual who can tackle problems faced in the future.” – Hayden
“Hopefully, all of the skills I have learnt and improved on will be transferable to my day-to-day work and make me an all-round better performer. Whilst being on project, my eyes have also been opened to sustainable development and how I can improve on my own sustainability when I return home.” – Max
“On my return to VolkerFitzpatrick, I will apply all the developed and new skills learnt on my expedition. Once I start getting involved in the management side of construction, I would like to go back and work with Raleigh on another expedition but as a project manager. I believe that this would allow me to further develop my management and organisational skills in a challenging environment.” – Alvaro
“Estoy interesado en crear conciencia sobre Raleigh International y la importancia de sus proyectos y su contribución a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. También quiero resaltar cómo experiencias como la mía contribuyen a convertir a una persona joven en una persona más fuerte, más abierta y equilibrada que pueda abordar los problemas que enfrentará en el futuro.” – Hayden
“Afortunadamente, todas las habilidades que he aprendido y mejorado serán transferibles a mi trabajo diario yme ayudarán a tener un mejor desempeño . Mientras estoy en proyecto, mis ojos también se han abierto al desarrollo sostenible y cómo puedo mejorar mi propia sostenibilidad cuando regreso a casa.” – Max
“A mi regreso a VolkerFitzpatrick, aplicaré todas las habilidades desarrolladas y nuevas aprendidas en mi expedición. Una vez que empiezo a involucrarme en el lado administrativo de la construcción, me gustaría volver y trabajar con Raleigh en otra expedición, pero como gerente de proyecto. Creo que esto me permitiría desarrollar aún más mis habilidades administrativas y organizativas en un entorno desafiante.” – Alvaro
