Raleigh International launches Raleigh Borneo Expedition
We are excited to announce that in February 2025, Raleigh International will be relaunching our Expedition in Malaysian Borneo!
7 years following Raleigh’s departure from Borneo, Raleigh is returning to the State of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo to bring even more even more impact for its rural communities and natural habitats through volunteer-run community and environmental projects.
Young people will have the chance to immerse into Borneo’s indigenous cultures and experience life off the beaten path on the Expedition. Rich in incredible wildlife and nature, Malaysian Borneo is home to a huge 6% of the world’s biodiversity and home to a number of endemic species, including pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys. Its landscapes are vast and beautiful, with Borneo’s ancient rainforest being the largest example of jungle in Southeast Asia.
For our Expedition launching in February 2025, there will be spaces for 50 young Venturers to take part in the Expedition, where they will have the chance to take part in a both a community and environment project, as well as an adventure challenge.
For the first time ever, the adventure phase of our new Borneo Expedition will not solely be focused on trekking. With two parts to the 19-day adventure phase, Venturers will have the chance to spend 7-days trekking the Salt Trail of Borneo’s Crocker Range, while the remaining 12-days will bring them to Batu Puteh, a Sungai native community living by the Kinabatangan River. Here they will support an eco-tourism initiative and will be immersed into jungle life, and will also get the opportunity to take part in a river wildlife safari and visit Borneo’s famous Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.
As well as the adventure challenge, Venturers will also have the chance to take part in community projects supporting indigenous Dusun communities on infrastructure building, and can also support important reforestation and mangrove rehabilitation work on their environmental projects.
Words from Lucy Constable, Managing Director of Raleigh International
“We are so excited to be returning to Borneo through our new Expedition! Raleigh International has a long legacy in Borneo having run Expeditions there for over 30 years until 2017. I know there many communities in Borneo who benefitted from Raleigh’s work over the years, and we’re thrilled that we are being welcomed back to Borneo by our supporters. We’re excited to continue creating a positive impact in Borneo and can’t wait to provide even more life changing experiences for a new cohort of Raleigh young people!”.
