5 Benefits of Disconnecting from Technology

Raleigh has always believed in the benefits of taking a break from screens. That is why it is not surprising that our volunteers are encouraged to reduce screen time and disconnect from digital devices during expeditions with a no-phone policy.

Despite this, there is no denying that digital devices have become an integral part of our daily lives. From Apple to Zoom, the idea of technology is to efficiently exchange information and improve communication while working or entertaining ourselves. Each year, social media gains millions of new users, and much of the worldwide population has joined platforms like Tik Tok, Instagram, X (formally known as Twitter), Snapchat, etc.

What is a Digital Detox?

The infamous digital detox has become popular in our technologically dependent era, when losing access to one’s gadget is like losing one’s pulse. There is much to be said about the benefits of disconnecting from technology, but exactly what is a digital detox? A digital detox is a self-proclaimed period of time when people purposely take a break from technology and don’t use any kind of electronic gadget, including cell phones, laptops, and social media. People engage in this practice because they believe they can reap some of the benefits of unplugging, such as improved relaxation, concentration, interpersonal connections, and getting in touch with their inner selves.

What Are the Pros of Disconnecting from Technology?

Indeed, these days, it pays to be a tech-savvy individual who embraces the allure and necessity of technology. However, it can be costly in other areas, so it is important to also understand the importance of occasionally unplugging from the internet. Here are eight benefits of disconnecting from technology:

1. Improved Sleep

Electronic devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers give off blue light, which can stop your body from making melatonin normally. This can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. It is possible to increase the quality of your sleep by disconnecting from technology before going to bed. This will allow you to wake up feeling more rested and rejuvenated than you did previously. Taking a break from technology, particularly in the hours leading up to bedtime, can result in improved sleep quality and quantity.

2. Boosted Productivity

After taking a break from digital devices, our volunteers share how Raleigh’s no phone policy creates better experiences on expedition. From this, they could focus better on their work without getting constantly distracted by social media alerts and content. A significant amount of distraction may be caused by constant messages and alerts, which can make it difficult to concentrate on activities and reduce overall productivity. The ability to disconnect from technology enables you to get rid of these distractions and concentrate on the work at hand, which in turn enables you to accomplish more in a shorter amount of time.

3. Reduced Stress and Anxiety

It is possible to reduce levels of stress and anxiety by taking a break from technology to relax and recharge. Numerous studies have demonstrated that an excessive amount of screentime can result in elevated levels of stress, anxiety, and melancholy. You may boost your mental health by giving your mind a chance to digitally detox by taking a vacation from the digital world. This will allow your mind to function more effectively. Taking a break from technology can also help minimize feelings of FOMO, which stands for “fear of missing out,” as well as thoughts of comparison to other people on these platforms.

4. Better Physical Health

Spending less time in front of a screen can help reduce eye strain, headaches, and posture-related problems. In addition to contributing to unhealthy habits and bad physical health, spending an excessive amount of time sitting in front of a computer does not help. The act of disconnecting from technology motivates us to move our bodies and participate in activities that require physical exertion, such as going for a walk, running, or playing sports. It is possible that this will result in enhanced cardiovascular health, a decreased chance of developing chronic illnesses, and an overall improvement in fitness.

5. Stronger Relationships

Putting aside your electronic gadgets will allow you to cultivate better ties with the individuals in your immediate environment. When it comes to developing strong and lasting connections, face-to-face contact is very necessary. If we spend an excessive amount of time gazing at screens, we may overlook our connections with people in real life, which can result in a weakening of our relationships with our friends and family. It is possible for us to become thoughtful travelers who have more meaningful talks and deepen our relationships if we disconnect from technology and take advantage of this chance.

How to Do a Digital Detox

Set Boundaries

Set limits on how and when you can use technology in advance. Consider setting a timer to go off at a specific hour or deciding to take a stroll without your phone. If you want to avoid the temptation to check your phone too often, set clear limits for yourself.

Find Alternative Activities

Swap out your tech time for something more pleasurable, like reading, cooking, gardening, or going for a walk in the park. When you have alternatives available, it may be much simpler to separate from the situation and enjoy the time without experiencing feelings of boredom or anxiety. The perfect moment for such activities, perhaps, is after allowing your battery to drain until it turns off and keeping it off once connected to its charger again.

Use Apps To Limit Usage

To keep tabs on and control your technology consumption, there are a plethora of apps to choose from. In fact, most smartphones have built-in functions or downloadable apps that can prevent you from accessing websites that are too distracting, remind you to take breaks, and even lock your phone for certain amounts of time.

Create Accountability

Tell someone you trust that you’re going to take a break from technology so they can keep you to your word. If you are looking for support and inspiration, you can also think about becoming a member of a community or organization that is focused on digital wellbeing. Your Raleigh Expedition will not only help you with this but also help you focus on the meaningful cause you devote your time to.

Start Small

If you are accustomed to being connected all the time, quitting cold turkey may not be the best idea. As an alternative, begin with baby measures such as turning off push notifications or allocating distinct times of the day for activities that do not involve engaging with technology. It is possible that gradually improving your tolerance for detachment will make the process easier over the course of time, and that’s one of the many ways a Raleigh expedition changes you.
